About Us & Resources

Neighborhood coffee shop with serious coffee, baked goods, and a cozy "third place" vibe. Great for laptop days, quiet catch-ups, or pre-event caffeine before you head downtown.

Part coffee shop, part brunch spot, part craft brewery — a little all-in-one gem on the north side. Think great breakfast, legit coffee, and the option to stick around for a beer later in the day.

A plant-filled gift shop with candles, cards, and "I didn't know I needed this" treasures. Perfect for last-minute gifts, housewarmings, or just treating yourself to something pretty.

A hat shop that's way cooler than "just hats" sounds — walls of fedoras, caps, and statement pieces, plus staff who actually help you find something that fits your style and face.

A Dayton classic that still feels like a bit of a secret if you've never been inside. Old-school chocolate shop energy, boxes of candy for every occasion, and a solid "bring this as a host gift" move.

Taxidermy, curiosities, art, and full-on "what is this place?" vibes. Not for everyone, but absolutely a hidden gem if you love weird, artsy, one-of-a-kind finds.

A warehouse of used books priced like it's still 1995 — the kind of place you can lose an hour (or three) digging for your next read. Perfect for rainy days and cheap kid-book hauls.

Not exactly a "secret," but still one of Dayton's most under-appreciated weekly rituals: local vendors, produce, prepared foods, small makers, and people-watching all under one roof.
You don't need to hit all of these at once. Pick one, try it, and if it becomes your spot, tell a friend — or tell us.

Over time, we'll keep adding to this list as we discover (and hear from you about) more Dayton pros who consistently show up, do good work, and treat people right. If you have a local favorite you swear by, hit reply to one of our emails and tell us who they are and what they helped you with — they might end up in a future version of this guide.
Start at: a downtown spot with big windows, good drinks, and something warm and shareable (think small plates, flatbreads, or apps).
Then: Take a bundled-up stroll for a few blocks to see the city lights, or do a slow drive through downtown/near the river to soak in the views from the warmth of the car.
Optional extra: Swing by a late-night bakery, cookie shop, or dessert spot, then head home and finish the night on the couch.
Start at: an upscale-but-not-stuffy restaurant in the Oregon District for cocktails and dinner.
Then: Wander down 5th Street, pop into a couple of bars or shops, or just people-watch along the strip.
Optional extra: Cap the night with a drink at a cozy cocktail bar for dim lights and nightcap vibes.
Start at: a laid-back pub in the Oregon District for casual food, craft drinks, and easy conversation.
Then: Stay for the live music or walk over to a nearby venue to catch a show or food truck event.
Optional extra: Grab a late slice or snack in the district before you call it a night.
Start at: a colorful, character-filled spot with creative cocktails and an eclectic menu.
Then: Walk the district, check out murals and storefronts, and duck into another bar if the night's still young.
Optional extra: Have dessert waiting at home from a local bakery and finish the night on the couch.
Start at: Grab takeout from your favorite Dayton spot and bring it home or eat it in the car — no cooking, no dishes.
Then: Do a slow "city lights" loop together: downtown, your favorite neighborhoods, or any winter light displays that are up. Windows cracked just enough for fresh air, heat on high.
Optional extra: End the night with hot chocolate or tea at home and a movie, board game, or "phones in another room" conversation.
Start at: a downtown spot known for craft tequila or cocktails and small bites.
Then: Stick around if there's live music, or walk toward the Oregon District and bar-hop your way down 5th.
Optional extra: Finish with a shared dessert or nightcap at another nearby spot, or grab to-go sweets on the way home.
Start at: a local coffee shop with comfy chairs and good lattes for a slow, no-rush catch-up.
Then: Walk a nearby neighborhood (if it's not too icy), browse a local bookstore, or just drive around and talk with no real agenda.
Optional extra: Take your drinks to-go and park somewhere with a view for a little car-date, music on low, phones on silent.
Start at: a local museum or gallery visit for something a little more "grown up" than dinner and a movie.
Then: Head to a nearby bar or lounge for a drink and a snack where you can actually talk about what you just saw.
Optional extra: Grab dessert or a fancy coffee on the way home and keep the conversation going at the kitchen table.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery - Dayton
Hands-on science exhibits, a little indoor "zoo," planetarium shows, and plenty of buttons to push and things to climb. Great for a solid 2–3 hours of kid wonder.

Scene75 Entertainment
Center - Vandalia
Huge indoor fun zone with arcade games, go-karts, laser tag, blacklight mini-golf, and more. Great for bigger kids or mixed ages when you want to let them run wild.

Trampoline Parks Huber - Heights / Centerville area
Spots like Get Air and Sky Zone are perfect for burning energy with trampolines, foam pits, and dodgeball. Check "toddler time" or quieter hours if your kids don't love crowds.

Dayton Metro Library Main & Branches
Storytimes, kids' corners, stacks of books, and regular family events — all free, warm, and easy. Main Library downtown is a great "make a whole morning of it" destination.

Bundle up, hit a nearby playground or open field for 20–30 minutes, then back home for warm socks and cocoa. Short and sweet still counts.
On clear days, places like RiverScape, Cox Arboretum, and Wegerzyn are just as nice in the cold — fewer bugs, quieter trails, and a totally different vibe than summer.
If we get a decent snow, find a low-key sledding hill or just let the kids stomp, build, and throw snow (within reason 😅). Ten good runs down a hill can erase a day of cabin fever.
Even if you don't leave home: races, snowball toss into a bucket, or "how many things can you spot that are green?" can reset the mood fast.
Grab hot chocolate, cookies, or a small treat from a local spot and hit the nearest playground for 20–30 minutes of bundled-up climbing before homework.
Pop in for a 20-minute "everyone picks one thing" run — a book, a comic, a movie — then head home. Free, easy, and indoors.
Make a quick list (red door, dog, bird, funny sign) and walk your block finding as many as you can together. Zero prep, but it feels like a game.

Museum in the morning, then hot chocolate, cookies, or a favorite snack on the way home. Low stress, high win rate.
Mix two indoor stops: library + trampoline park, Scene75 + pizza, or kids' matinee + ice cream. One "big" stop, one simple treat.
On those rare sunny winter days, pick a MetroPark and do a short loop trail. Hats, gloves, and a thermos of something warm turn it into an adventure instead of a chore.
If you day trip to Cincinnati or Columbus, some winter days are quieter and you see different animal behavior than in summer. Just bundle up and set a "we don't have to see it all" plan.
Make sure to keep an eye on the Events section in our newsletter — we're always popping in kid-friendly events and family ideas as they're announced.
Blind Bob's (Oregon District) – casual pub food, strong drinks, local and touring bands.
Yellow Cab Tavern – part bar, part community hub, with live music, food trucks, and festivals.
The Brightside – indie-leaning venue with original music, themed nights, and special events.
Oregon District in general – walk 5th Street on a weekend and you'll usually hear something: bands, DJs, trivia, and more tucked into bar after bar.
These are more of a warm-weather thing, but they're worth bookmarking now so you're ready when the season kicks back in:
Levitt Pavilion Dayton (Downtown) – dozens of free concerts every summer, Thursday–Sunday in season. Bring a blanket, chairs, and snacks.
RiverScape MetroPark Music Series – riverfront shows and themed nights that pair perfectly with a walk along the river.
Fraze Pavilion & Rose Music Center – bigger touring acts and summer concerts a short drive from Dayton.
Live music changes week to week — that's our job to track, not yours.
In your Dayton Daily Dose emails, look for the "Sound Bites" section. That's where we:
If you love live music, make a habit of skimming Sound Bites every issue — and if you're an event organizer (or just don't want us to miss something great), you can always submit it through our event form.
