After years of water loss caused by erosion and drought, Englewood MetroPark’s 40-acre wetland has been revived through a dedicated months-long restoration effort by Five Rivers MetroParks. Repairs reinforced erosion points in the levee using soil, clay, and rocks, followed by reseeding native plants to strengthen the soil and slow water runoff. The wetland’s rejuvenation is already drawing back migratory and native birds, including ducks and pintails, revitalizing a crucial habitat on their migratory route while helping protect nearby communities from flooding. This successful restoration highlights conservation’s vital role in preserving Dayton’s unique natural heritage and enhancing local quality of life. The team now plans to install a permanent berm replacement funded by recently approved levy money to secure the wetland’s future. Read more

Ohio lawmakers are considering House Bill 262, which would designate "Natural Family Month" between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as a way to address the state’s declining birthrate. Supporters say the initiative aims to encourage marriage and family building for community wellbeing, highlighting data that children in stable, two-parent households often have better outcomes. The bill has sparked debate about inclusion and family definitions, drawing both faith-based support and criticism from advocacy groups and progressive voices.
Greater Dayton Premier Management has reached a major milestone in West Dayton with the completion of 50 new affordable apartments at Germantown Crossing, replacing outdated DeSoto Bass Courts units. This $16 million project, a decade in the making, is providing modern, stable housing for residents in the Miami Chapel neighborhood—one of Dayton’s areas most impacted by poverty. Tenants have already started moving in, and community members say the updated homes, increased security, restored hope, and elevated living standards.
