Good evening, Dayton!
Hereβs Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Miamisburg, just south of Dayton along the Great Miami River, is home to the Mound Laboratory - a facility operated by the U.S. Department of Energy that played a significant but classified role in nuclear weapons research during the Cold War, and is now in the middle of a decades-long environmental cleanup.
Tonightβs Top Stories Around Dayton:
Wright State University earned a spot among the top 7% of universities on a global list of more than 21,000 institutions worldwide.
Mercy Health launched a confidential mental health program built entirely around the people who run toward emergencies every day.
The Dayton VA celebrated cancer survivors and went live on a new health records system that will eventually serve veterans nationwide.

DAYTON DIGEST
π¨ When a First Responder Is in Crisis, Two Words Now Open a Door
Mercy Health Dayton Springfield Emergency Center has introduced "Protocol 99," a new mental health initiative built specifically for active and retired EMS, fire, and law enforcement members across the Miami Valley. First responders in crisis can simply say those two words at registration and be immediately seen by clinicians who understand their world, with no waiting room and no paperwork trail that could affect their careers. The program was designed around a hard truth: first responders are trained to run toward emergencies, not ask for help, and stigma, privacy concerns, and fear of career consequences have long kept them from seeking care. Protocol 99 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the center's discreet freestanding location at 1840 Springfield Road in Fairborn. This community just built a quieter door for the people who protect it.
π’ Dayton Just Made a Smart Long-Term Move on First Street
The City of Dayton purchased three parcels at 700, 704, and 726 E. First Street from Dayton Children's Hospital for $2,050,000. The building previously housed a behavioral health services clinic before those services were relocated to the hospital's main campus. The city plans to move its employee health and wellness clinic, the Dayton Off-site Clinic (DOC), into the new building by late 2026 or early 2027. Currently, the city pays roughly $150,000 per year in rent for the clinic's current space, with a 4% annual increase locked in going forward. Roughly 60% of city employees rely on the DOC for their primary medical care, making this a purchase that pays for itself faster than it might look.
ποΈ The Dayton VA Had a Big Week for Its Veterans
The Dayton VA Medical Center hosted its annual Cancer Survivors Day Celebration on June 5, drawing people together for a cancer walk, vendor fair, symposium, and refreshments at its campus on West Third Street, open to all cancer survivors. The same week, the Dayton VA launched a new Electronic Health Record system, described by VA officials as a transformative shift in how veteran healthcare is tracked and delivered across the nation. The new system creates a complete, unified health history for each veteran, starting from their first day of enlistment and following them for the rest of their lives. The Dayton VA is among the first facilities in the country to go live with the system, alongside sites in Chillicothe and Cincinnati, with all VA medical facilities nationwide expected to adopt it by 2031. Two milestones in one week for a facility that pours itself into the people who served.

21,000 Universities. One from Dayton Made the Top 7%

Wright State University has been ranked among the top 7% of universities worldwide in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings Global 2000 list, placing No. 1,483 globally and No. 255 in the United States out of 21,291 institutions evaluated. That puts a Dayton university in the same conversation as institutions from every corner of the world, and it did not get there by accident. The rankings are built entirely on 81 million outcome-based data points, measuring the real-world success of alumni and faculty without relying on surveys or self-reported university data. Wright State's rise reflects its deep ties to Premier Health, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and regional employers who help turn students into workforce-ready graduates, while keeping tuition affordable enough that those opportunities are actually accessible. Susan Schaurer, vice president for enrollment management, said the recognition reflects intentional relationships with employers, community organizations, and research collaborators who are invested in this region's future. When a university in Dayton earns a global ranking built purely on what its graduates go on to do, that is the whole city winning.

Meet Belize
The chatty, chubby-cheeked senior who knows exactly who she is, and she'd love to spend her golden years on your lap.
At thirteen years old, Belize has earned the right to take it easy, and she does it beautifully. This sweet Domestic Shorthair came to SICSA after her owner left her with someone for temporary safekeeping and was unable to come back for her. When her living situation changed and she could no longer stay, Belize found herself starting fresh at an age when most cats are happily settled in. She has been at SICSA for over a month now, waiting for the right person to see what a gem she is.
A day with Belize:
Here is the best part about welcoming home an older cat like Belize. What you see is what you get, no surprises and no wild kitten antics. Her favorite pastime is napping, whether that is curled into a cozy donut bed in a sunny spot or stretched right out on your lap. She is delightfully chatty and will nudge your hand when she has decided she would like a few more pets, which is often. With her round cheeks and stunning green eyes, she has all the charm of a kitten and a calm, gentle heart to match, and she would love nothing more than a comfy home to settle into.
Who she's perfect for:
Belize is wonderful for someone who wants a calm, affectionate companion and is not looking for the busy energy of a young kitten. If you work from home, love a quiet evening, or just want a sweet feline friend who will keep you company and ask for head scratches, she is your girl. She would be happiest in a peaceful household where she can be the center of attention.
This pet is available through SICSA Pet Adoption & Wellness Center 8172 Washington Church Rd, Washington Township, OH 45458
