🚀 A Beavercreek Company's New Job: Growing the Air Force's Next Scientists
ARCTOS, a Beavercreek defense contractor, just landed a contract worth up to $60 million to help the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson find its next generation of scientists and engineers. Through the Next-Gen Innovators program, the company will help organize internships, apprenticeships, and mentorships, connecting airmen and Space Force guardians with students as tutors, science fair judges, and guest speakers. ARCTOS traces its Dayton-area roots back to 1961 as Universal Technology Co. before rebranding in 2020, and in March, Virginia-based DCS Corp. acquired the company, bringing together roughly 350 local employees.
🏛️ A 110-Year-Old Dayton Club Is Opening Its Doors for a Very Historic September
Dayton Woman's Club is celebrating its 110th anniversary and America's 250th with a full slate of events this month, built around the themes "We the People" and "Power of Place." From September 8 through 25, the club is hosting a military history display with the American Veterans Heritage Center showing how uniforms for men and women have changed across the decades. Other highlights include a free guided tour of the club's Victorian mansion, built around 1850, on September 13, plus history talks later in the month on Dayton's canal era and on women's fashion during the American Revolution, each $15 with RSVP required.
🎓 A Dayton Nonprofit Is Now Leading a Statewide Push for Student Success
Learn to Earn Dayton, a Montgomery County nonprofit focused on youth success, is now leading a statewide push to get local partners working together instead of separately. Ohio has rolled out 12 Regional Education Partnerships that will track shared data, from kindergarten readiness to high school graduation and workforce participation, so gaps get caught and addressed sooner. "Ohio's future depends on the success of our young people," Gov. Mike DeWine said in announcing the framework, while CEO Stacy Schweikhart says the approach is about giving every region the data and connections it needs to turn strategy into real outcomes for kids.
Dayton's 11th Annual Motorcycle Ride Will Honor Veterans With a Full Police Escort This Saturday
The Dayton National Cemetery Honor Squad is holding its 11th Annual Motorcycle Ride for the Veterans this Saturday, September 12, with a full police escort guiding riders from Xenia to Beavercreek. Registration opens at 9 AM at Harley-Davidson of Xenia (1213 Cincinnati Ave), where breakfast food trucks will be on site before kickstands go up at 11 AM. Riders will take a refreshment break at the Dayton VA Campus before finishing at VFW Post 8312 in Beavercreek, where a raffle, 50/50 drawing, and post-ride auction will follow. It costs $25 per rider and $10 per passenger, with proceeds supporting a group of volunteers who provide full military honors to every veteran laid to rest at the Dayton National Cemetery and receive no outside funding. Riders can register in advance at daytonhonorsquad.com or simply show up and pay the day of the ride, and anyone who would rather support without riding can donate through the same site.

Meet Zeus
85 pounds of second chances and pure, unfiltered joy.
Some dogs demand your attention the second they walk into a room. Zeus is not that dog. Zeus lumbers over, drops his full weight against your leg, and looks up at you with a face that says he has been waiting for exactly this moment. He is a six-year-old American Bulldog mix with a head that takes up half the frame in every photo and a personality that somehow takes up even more.
The Story
Zeus was found inside an abandoned house alongside another dog. There was no food. There was no water. Both dogs were severely malnourished, and Zeus barely resembled the broad, stocky boy he was built to be. Since arriving at SICSA in late April, he has made a full transformation. Four months of consistent meals, patient hands, and people who refused to give up on him turned a starving, forgotten dog into a confident, thriving companion who wakes up every single day grateful to be here.
What They're Like
Zeus has a few signature talents that will win you over immediately. Toss a treat in his direction and he will catch it mid-air, every time, no matter the angle. He gets genuinely excited about playing dress-up and will sit perfectly still while you place any style of hat on his oversized head, looking absolutely proud of whatever look he is wearing. He enjoys toys and walks, but Zeus is a mellow soul at heart. He would rather stretch out in the shade next to a kiddie pool than chase anything in the sun. He is calm without being lazy and affectionate without being needy.
A Day With Zeus
Mornings with Zeus start slowly. A big stretch, a solid breakfast (easily his favorite part of the day, and after what he went through, no one can blame him), and a walk around the block where every mailbox and fire hydrant gets a thorough inspection. Afternoons are for lounging in the coolest spot he can find, maybe a round of treat-catching practice, and a long nap near whoever happens to be home. He does not need constant entertainment. He just wants to be in the same room as his person, leaning in, perfectly content to share the quiet.
Who They're Perfect For
Zeus would thrive with someone who appreciates a calm, deeply affectionate dog who gives everything without asking for much in return. Because of his size and his lovable but sometimes clumsy enthusiasm, he would do best in a home without young children or other pets. He is not difficult. He is just big and does not always realize where his body ends and yours begins. A single person, a couple, or a family with older kids looking for a loyal, goofy, treat-obsessed companion would be his perfect match.
Zeus has been waiting at SICSA since April, making him one of their longest-term residents. He is not picky about what "home" looks like. He just wants one.
