DAYTON DIGEST
π Schools Closed Through Week After Winter Blast
Dayton Public Schools will not hold classes Thursday or Friday this week as extreme cold and ongoing snow impacts continue following a major winter storm. The district also canceled all extracurricular, after-school, and athletic events during the closure, though officials say some athletic events might resume if conditions improve. Only essential grounds and transportation staff are expected to report to work while families deal with winterβs lingering effects.
πΌ Dayton-Based CareSource Expands TRICARE Role

The work, expected to begin in 2026, could be worth tens of millions and gives eligible service members and families another option for Prime coverage in those markets.
π Safe Exchange Zones Aim to Protect Buyers and Sellers

These monitored areas, located at local sheriffβs substations, are meant to reduce robberies and robberies linked to meeting strangers for item exchanges and deputies suggest meeting during daytime hours and bringing someone along.

More Than 200 Tails Wagging Into New Homes This Month

On a cold January day in Dayton, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is sharing some truly heartwarming news: more than 200 animals have already been adopted this month. The local nonprofit, which has served the Miami Valley for more than a century, says the surge means hundreds of dogs, cats, and small animals are now settling into loving, permanent homes. Staff and volunteers credit the communityβs generosity, from adopters opening their doors to supporters spreading the word and lending a hand. Moments like this highlight what Dayton does best, neighbors showing up for one another, including the four-legged ones. Each adoption represents a fresh start for an animal and a meaningful connection for a local family opening their home. If you have been thinking about adding a pet to your family, the Humane Society reminds residents that many animals are still waiting and ready to meet their match.
