Good morning, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Miami and Erie Canal towpath, portions of which still exist as hiking and cycling trails in the Dayton area, was once one of the busiest commercial corridors in the Midwest - canal boats loaded with grain, lumber, and manufactured goods moved through the Miami Valley at a pace that made the waterway the economic engine of a region that had been frontier wilderness a generation earlier.
Inside Today’s Edition…
Germanfest brought three days of food, music and Dayton heritage to St. Anne's Hill.
MOJO is bringing six race options to VOA Park this Sunday.

DAYTON DIGEST
🎪 A little Ohio State Fair spirit is coming to the library
The Dayton Metro Library's Northmont Library, at 700 W. National Road in Englewood, is hosting a Back to School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is built around an “Ohio Goes to the Fair” theme as part of the library's year-long celebration of America's 250th anniversary in 2026. Guests can enjoy fair-themed crafts, games and activities, connect with community partners and see balloon animals from Ranger Vic as Happy the Clown. The flyer also notes that the Ohio State Fair is opening its 1976 time capsule this year and creating a new one to be opened in 50 years.
🥨 Germanfest is the kind of tradition people come back for
The 43rd annual Germanfest Picnic brought German food, music, dancing and community to Dayton's historic St. Anne's Hill from Aug. 14-16. Founded in 1983, the festival celebrates Miami Valley German heritage through traditional food, music and cultural activities. One volunteer, Jeanette Watts, drove roughly four hours from Illinois to return to the festival, saying she continues to think of the people there as friends, family and community. And the German celebrations aren't over for the year: Vandalia Oktoberfest is Sept. 11-12, followed by the Dayton Art Institute Oktoberfest Sept. 25-27.
🏊 MOJO has more than one way to take on the challenge
The 2026 MOJO Triathlon is set for Sunday, Aug. 23, at VOA Park in West Chester. Athletes can choose from a Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon, duathlon, aquabike and relay options, with para divisions included as part of the event's push toward greater inclusion. The Sprint Triathlon covers a 750-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run, while the Olympic distance includes a 1,500-meter swim, 40K bike and 10K run. Race day begins early, with the park opening at 5:15 a.m. and the first para race starting at 7:15 a.m.

Wright State volleyball stepped up for hundreds of Greene County kids

Sometimes community support looks like showing up, and Wright State's volleyball team did just that for hundreds of Greene County children at a Back-to-School Kick-Off in Xenia. Hosted by Family Promise of Greene County at Lexington Park on Aug. 6, the event provided students and families with backpacks, school supplies and free haircuts while connecting them with community resources. Wright State volleyball student-athletes also met families, handed out mini volleyballs and shared schedules for the upcoming season. Senior Lauren Yacobucci, a biological sciences major, said the team enjoyed connecting with the community and invited families to come to Wright State for a game. Rowdy Raider joined the team, posing for photos with children and families throughout an event designed to help local families get ready for the new school year.
