🍫 The Festival That Moved Rather Than Charge You a Dime
Keeping the Chocolate Festival free meant giving up its home of nearly a decade. Rising rental costs at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds would have forced organizers Bill Nance and Melody Morris of Faith and Friends Radio to either start selling admission or raise vendor booth fees, so they packed up instead. The 23rd annual festival now lands at the Greene County Fairgrounds & Expo Center, 120 Fairgrounds Rd. in Xenia, on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free entry and free parking intact. This year's America250 theme, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Chocolate," brings patriotic music from the entertainment stage, a bounce house, the award-winning "Kaleidoscope" radio variety show, and vendors like Winans Chocolate.
🎓 One of 207 in the Country, and Wright-Patt Shapes What Comes Next
The Princeton Review just named Wright State's Raj Soin College of Business one of the best on-campus MBA programs in the nation, one of only 207 schools on its Best Business Schools list for 2027. The ranking is built from institutional and student survey data covering career outcomes, admissions selectivity, and academic rigor. Dean Rajneesh Suri said the program deliberately links business education with engineering, science, and technology so graduates can lead through change rather than react to it. The most Dayton piece arrives this fall 2026, when the college adds a Defense Acquisition concentration built around the university's proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the region's defense ecosystem.
🍦 The Corn Maze Money Has to Last Until Spring
That last warm holiday weekend is not just a send-off for summer around here, it is the paycheck that carries a lot of local shops into winter. John Young, CEO of Young's Jersey Dairy, said it is the busiest wristband week of the year for his 90-employee operation, and that traffic tails off by November and December. At Jubie's Creamery, Vice President of Operations Julie Yarkony said summer revenue is what lets the shop stay open in the cold months and keep her staff on the schedule with hours they can actually live on. What both of them asked for costs nothing: leave a review on Google or Yelp, share their posts, recommend them to a friend, and show up when they host something.
Stand on the Dam, Look Up, and Watch Dayton History Go By
For one afternoon this month, the Miami Conservancy District and the National Park Service are opening Huffman Dam in Greene County to anyone who registers, and a Wright "B" Flyer will pass overhead while you are standing on it. The free tour runs 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, with shuttles carrying visitors between stops so you can walk the structure with MCD engineers, learn how a dry dam holds back floodwater, and explore the Wright Brothers Memorial with the National Park Service. Boonshoft Museum is bringing a cast of the Huffman Dam trilobite, a 450 million year old fossil that crews pulled out of this ground in 1919 and sent to the Smithsonian Institution the same year, so a single afternoon here spans the Great Flood of 1913, a century of flood protection built in its wake, and half a billion years of Ohio geology. The flyover carries real weight because Huffman Prairie Flying Field sits right there, the unglamorous cow pasture where Wilbur and Orville Wright kept going after Kitty Hawk and turned a fragile idea into the world's first practical airplane. Sarah Hippensteel Hall, MCD's manager of communications, outreach and stewardship, described it as a place where you can almost see the layers of the region's history at once, and while advance registration is required and the flyover depends on weather and flying conditions, Five Rivers MetroParks and Greene County Parks & Trails are among the partners expected on site.

Snap It, Pin It, and Let the City Sort Out Whose Wall It Is
Reporting graffiti in Dayton used to come with a homework assignment: figure out for yourself whether the wall belonged to the city or a private owner. The new Graffiti Delete tool at daytonohio.gov/graffiti removes that step, letting anyone upload a photo and drop a pin on the exact spot while the city routes sidewalks and alleys to the department of public works and private property to the housing division. Deputy City Manager Joe Parlette said the old expectation was not a fair one to put on a resident who was only trying to help, and faster, more accurate reports mean crews can get out there sooner.

Wright State handed Dayton two sets, then hit .400 in the fifth and sided out on all eight Dayton serves to take the rivalry match 3-2 inside the Nutter Center on Sunday, Sept. 6, winning 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 21-25, 15-7. Mya Ayro was everywhere with a match-high 23 kills and 14 digs, while Lauren Yacobucci ran the offense for 44 assists and 13 digs and Taygan Corstange dug up 20 balls in the back row. Katie Sowko chipped in 11 kills and 17 digs, and Reilly Zegunis and Abbey Knight each added five blocks to go with 12 and 11 kills. The Raiders raced to 8-3 in the deciding set and ended the afternoon on a block from Knight and Haley Robinson, with Kamryn Hunt leading Dayton on 21 kills.
Next game: Wright State will face High Point at the Pittsburgh Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m.
