Good evening, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's downtown riverfront has been transformed more dramatically in the last 25 years than in the previous 75 - the combination of the water trail, RiverScape MetroPark, the Dragons ballpark, the Water Street District restaurants, and the Arcade renovation has produced an urban waterfront that bears almost no resemblance to the industrial and flood-damaged corridor that occupied the same geography a generation ago.
Tonight in Dayton:
How a local North Dayton woman rebuilt an empty storefront to offer safety, hope, and resources to women in need.
Montgomery County launched a new Kindness Closet to make sure every child entering foster care gets what they need from day one.
WWSU 106.9FM at Wright State scored a national equipment award that will transform how students learn broadcasting.

DAYTON DIGEST
🏋️ The YMCA Is Coming to You
The YMCA of Greater Dayton just received a Del Mar Grant for Older Adults from the Dayton Foundation to launch a brand-new mobile wellness program called Y on the Fly: Golden Hour. The program sends trained YMCA staff directly to assisted living communities, rehab centers, and memory care facilities during fall and winter months when isolation tends to peak. Seniors can expect chair-based fitness, cognitive enrichment, light games, and social time. No transportation needed.
📻 Wright State's Student Radio Just Got a Big-League Upgrade
WWSU 106.9FM, the student-run radio station at Wright State University, was selected from a national competition to receive a brand-new Omnia.11 FM+HD audio processor from Telos Alliance and the College Radio Foundation. The station had been operating on outdated equipment since their transmitter sustained damage during Hurricane Ike back in 2008. Student general manager Larkin Smith submitted the winning proposal, and says listeners will hear the difference immediately. The upgrade is part of a larger push to revitalize WWSU ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2027.
🌸 She Turned a Vacant Storefront into a Place Women Call a Safe Haven
Ashley Miller of Northridge spent 19 years in occupational therapy and mental health services before she felt called to something more. In 2022, she began doing street outreach in North Dayton, and by early 2024 had opened R House Ministries, a day center dedicated to supporting vulnerable local women in need of community and resources. The center served more than 1,500 people in its first year and over 2,800 the year after.

Montgomery County Just Made Sure No Child Enters Foster Care Empty-Handed

When a child is placed in kinship care or foster care, the first hours matter more than most people realize. Montgomery County just held a ribbon cutting for the Kindness Closet, a new resource that gives Child Protective Services caseworkers immediate access to clothing, shoes, school supplies, hygiene products, and other necessities so every child can transition with dignity and care. It grew out of the work of the SEEK Committee (Search, Engage, Explore and Kinnect), formed in early 2025 to strengthen connections between youth and family, and the team has already helped nearly 140 children find placement with kin. Community partners including Shoes for the Shoeless, Michael's Salon & Spa, and Isaiah 117 helped make it happen. On a weekend when Dayton is celebrating the women who show up unconditionally, this is our community doing the same for its most vulnerable kids.

Meet Kane
The bob-and-weave belcher with a big personality 🐶
Some dogs find their families at the park. Some find them at the shelter. But Kane, a four-year-old Shih Tzu with a tiny mohawk and a big personality, found his through a summer school classroom. Shlsmith was teaching one day when a student quietly showed a photo of his dog after other kids had laughed at him. The moment Kane’s picture appeared on that little phone screen, hearts melted. A call was made, a funny conversation with his former family followed, and before long Kane was on his way to what would become his forever home. His previous owner mentioned that Kane only drank bottled water, which gave everyone a good chuckle. It did not take long for Kane to discover that life, love, and even sink water could be pretty wonderful too.
These days, Kane rules the house like a fluffy little king 👑. He has a hilarious move his family calls the "Bob and Weave," where he jumps around new people’s legs instead of letting them pet him right away, almost like he is playing his own game of tag. He also claimed the cozy donut bed that was meant for the bigger dog on the very first day and has not looked back since. And perhaps Kane’s funniest talent of all happens after meals or drinks. At only 12 pounds, this little guy lets out a belch so deep and proud that everyone in the room bursts out laughing. With his silly habits, his tiny swagger, and those bright little eyes, Kane has a way of turning ordinary moments into the kind that make people smile and say, “Aww.”
