THE DAYTON DIGEST
❄️ Dayton Hospitals Update: Emergency Care Still On
Local hospital systems are keeping emergency rooms fully open despite the historic winter storm that hit the Miami Valley this weekend. Many non-essential services (like routine appointments, clinics and some tests), have been postponed or rescheduled to ensure patient and staff safety. Dayton Children’s, for example, shifted many outpatient visits to telehealth and closed its urgent care locations on Monday, but 24/7 emergency departments are ready for serious cases. Patients are encouraged to confirm appointments before traveling in winter conditions.
📏 Record Snowfall in 2026 Tops ’78 Blizzard
The great snowstorm that dumped heavy snow across Southwest Ohio on Jan. 25 has now set a new 24-hour snowfall record at Dayton International Airport, with 12.4 inches measured, just edging past the Blizzard of 1978’s 12.2-inch mark. While this does not surpass all-time storm totals (that record is 18.3 inches for a snowstorm that fell Feb. 16 and 17, 1910.), it’s a major local weather event many residents will remember.
🛷 BBB Warns of Snow Removal Scams After Storm
With the historic snowstorm fresh in everyone’s minds, the Better Business Bureau is alerting residents about scam artists targeting homeowners under the guise of snow removal and winter-related services. Officials say scammers may demand large payments upfront or show up unannounced offering to clear snow or repair storm damage, often without performing the work. The BBB urges people to verify credentials, check reviews, and never pay cash upfront for services after major weather events.

Sinclair Sees Its Strongest Spring Enrollment in Years
Sinclair Community College kicked off its spring term with more than 20,300 students enrolled, marking the highest spring enrollment the school has seen in 13 years — a milestone Dayton neighbors are proud to see right here in our own backyard. A big reason for the growth is more students returning to finish what they started, a surge in high schoolers earning college credit through Sinclair’s College Credit Plus program, and growing interest in new bachelor’s and workforce-focused programs. Military-affiliated and international student numbers are also up, bringing more diverse faces and experiences to campus this semester. With Sinclair offering flexible in-person and online options, local learners of all ages are finding paths that fit their lives while strengthening the region’s talent pool. This strong turnout reflects Dayton’s commitment to education, opportunity and building a skilled workforce right here where families live and work.

Dayton’s Call to Help: Blood Donations Needed After Historic Snowstorm

Dayton’s historic snowstorm, which dropped more than a foot of snow and broke local records, is not just making streets slippery, it is also creating a serious challenge for blood donations that keep local hospitals stocked and ready. The storm forced the cancellation of multiple blood drives and even led to Versiti Dayton’s donor center closing, compounding an already tight supply that supports more than 30 hospitals in the region. Tracy Morgan, Vice President of Donor Services at Versiti Dayton, says this kind of weather-related shutdown is rare in the organization’s 60‑year history and highlights how critical community donors are to everyday health care. With regular donations disrupted, local health leaders are encouraging Daytonians who are safe and able to venture out once roads clear to help replenish lifesaving blood products.

Dayton’s Winter Warming Centers

As a winter storm brings dangerously cold temperatures and windchills to Dayton, the city is opening warming centers to provide safe, welcoming spaces for anyone in need. These centers are available to neighbors who may be most at risk from the storm, including older adults, people with health concerns, or anyone without adequate heat at home. Staff at each location are ready to offer support and a warm place to stay until the weather improves. Please share this information so everyone in our community knows where they can go for safety and comfort.
