Good morning, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's human settlement history goes back at least 13,000 years - Paleo-Indian archaeological sites have been identified in the Miami Valley dating to the immediate post-glacial period, when the region's landscape looked more like boreal tundra than the rolling Ohio farmland we see today.
Inside Today’s Edition…
Four school running programs pick up checks at tonight’s costume 5K.

DAYTON DIGEST
👻 A Haunted House With the Lights Mostly On
Miamisburg is running its Not So Spooky Haunted House tomorrow (Wednesday, October 28) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Market Square, 4 N. Main Street. It is built for kids ages 4 to 10, though the city says anyone is welcome to walk through. Admission is $5 at the door. If your little one wants the costume and the candy without the jump scares, this is the version for them.
❤️ 675 Holes of Golf, and Counting
The Gala of Hope Foundation’s Veterans Hope campaign has raised $44,018 so far for Dayton-area veterans with cancer, covering costs like transportation, utilities, and groceries. Golfers from Ohio, Florida, and Maryland, along with the Wright State men’s golf team, had logged 675 holes as of Monday, October 26, and the marathon wraps up tomorrow (Wednesday, October 28). A $350 donation covers one Box of Hope, and volunteers will pack 100 boxes on Wednesday, November 11 at McGohan Brabender in Moraine for distribution through the Dayton VA. Executive director Morgan Ednie leads the campaign, which closes with a celebration at The Steam Plant on Thursday, October 29.
🎃 Porch Lights On, Phones Down
Trick-or-treating lands on Saturday, October 31 this year, and Miamisburg police and AAA have shared what they want parents and drivers thinking about. Officer Cindi Threlkeld suggests glow sticks or a flashlight so kids stay visible, face paint instead of masks that block vision, and stopping only at homes with the porch light on. Chelsea Sick of AAA Club Alliance asks drivers to slow down in neighborhoods and put the phone away. Clocks also fall back an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday (November 1), so expect more people out late than usual.

Run in Costume Tonight, Help a School Keep Running

The Ghost ‘n Goblin 5K starts tonight (Tuesday, October 27) at 6:15 p.m. at Sinclair Community College’s Centerville campus, 5800 Clyo Road, with a costume contest just before the start. The race belongs to the Ohio River Road Runners Club, an all volunteer group that calls this its second largest fundraiser behind the Turkey Trot. Proceeds this year go to youth running, with four local school programs each receiving up to $500 for equipment, uniforms, or race entries.
Runners pick a school district when they register, three finishers are drawn at random to send the money to their choice, and the fourth check goes to whichever school or group turned out the most of the nearly 150 volunteers the night needs. Last year those checks went to Dayton Public, Oakwood, Fairmont, and the Dayton Wolverines, and packet pickup runs 12:30 to 5:45 p.m. on site, with race day registration at $40.

The Salt Barns Are Already Stocked
The Ohio Department of Transportation has started its winter prep, with state engineers running more than 200 inspections across 1,700 trucks statewide and more than 600,000 tons of salt now stored under roof. Central Ohio alone is holding nearly 90,000 tons, with deliveries still arriving. The department has more than 330 full time highway technicians on for the season and is still filling seasonal positions, which are listed at transportation.ohio.gov.
