Good morning, Dayton!
Hereβs Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton was once nicknamed 'the Gem City' in the mid-1800s because of its unusually high concentration of wealthy manufacturers and elegant homes, and locals still use the nickname today even though most couldn't tell you where it originally came from.
The inside track on local happenings:
Montgomery County's 18 blood drives kick off Saturday, October 3, in Centerville and Germantown.
Dayton residents can request a free street tree through October 25.
Cyclists roll out from Gem City Market tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.

FOODIE FRIDAY
Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of mustβtry spots is here!
Dayton Barrel Works
They distill their own bourbon, rye, gin and vodka in the building, then pour it back to you across the bar. The Smokewood Old Fashioned is built on their Rubicon Creek Bourbon with smoked demerara, and the Five Dams uses house Lily Water Vodka with raspberry and ginger. Open Friday and Saturday evenings only, so plan for it. Downtown's best-kept cocktail secret.
π318 E 2nd St, Daytonπ
Archer's Tavern
Any place confident enough to call its wings the World's 2nd Best deserves a shot, and Archer's earns it. Get them alongside the Pretzel Sticks with beer cheese, then commit to the Black-N-Bleu Burger. They serve breakfast too, which is a nice surprise for a tavern. Locally owned with just two locations, both in our backyard.
π2030 E Dorothy Lane, Ketteringπ
Kramers
Kramers is the kind of neighborhood tavern near UD that every city should have one of. The Loaded Tots come piled with bacon, mozzarella and sour cream, and the Hot Italian Sub stacks ham, salami and pepperoni with banana peppers for good measure. Pizza and jumbo wings round it out. No pretense, just a good night.

DAYTON DIGEST
π³ A Free Tree for Your Curb
The City of Dayton is offering free street trees to city residents, with requests open through Sunday, October 25. Trees go in the public right-of-way, in a space at least 3 feet wide, 10 feet from utilities, and 25 feet from stop signs and intersections. A City Forester surveys each spot and makes the final species pick, though you're welcome to suggest one when you apply. The City adds a watering bag, and homeowners are asked to fill it weekly during the growing season for two years after planting.
π Flu Shots for Veterans, No Appointment Needed
Dayton VA starts offering flu vaccines to Veterans on Monday, October 5. Check in at the front desk in building 341 for the Primary Care vaccine clinic, open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. and on holidays. Eligible Veterans can also get free flu and COVID-19 vaccines at participating pharmacies like CVS, Kroger, Costco, and Walmart, with no VA referral, just a valid government ID. If you get your shot outside the VA, let your primary care team know so they can update your records.
π² Seven Stops on Two Wheels
Grab your bike: the Dayton Bike Meet rolls out tomorrow (Friday, October 2) from Gem City Market, with check-in from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The loop swings past the Paul Laurence Dunbar House for a regroup, then on to bites and drinks at West Social Tap & Table and The Silos, plus a First Friday event at Corporate Got 'Em. By about 7:40 p.m., riders are wandering open art studios and food trucks at First Fridays at Front Street Studios, then pedaling to Toxic Brewery in the Oregon District for the 8:30 p.m. finale. Every rider signs a waiver to ride safely, and the whole thing rolls again on the first Friday of every month.

A Pizza Shop, a Library & 16 More Places to Give Blood
Versiti Blood Center of Ohio is hosting 18 community blood drives across Montgomery County in October, from church halls in Centerville to a bank in Englewood. The first three are on Saturday, October 3, at Fairhaven Church and Sinclair College Centerville, both in Centerville, and at the Germantown Public Library. On Tuesday, October 13, the drive at Bella Sorella Pizza in Englewood will honor the restaurant's co-founder, Elizabeth Corrado Weizaman.
Walk-ins are welcome, but Versiti encourages booking ahead at versitidayton.org or by calling 937-461-3220, and the last drive runs Thursday, October 29, at Fairview Church of the Brethren in Englewood. Each donation helps restock the blood supply for local hospitals and the patients who rely on it, including people in cancer treatment, facing surgery, or recovering from traumatic injuries.
