Your Christmas tree gave your home a glow, now it can give local wildlife a home. Local wildlife experts say it can still serve a purpose after the holidays. Instead of tossing it to the curb, trees can be reused as shelters for birds and small animals or donated to programs that create natural habitats. It is an easy way for Dayton residents to reduce waste while helping local wildlife through the winter months.

The program, which is one of the first of its kind in the region and currently enrolls about 20 students, prepares them for Remote Pilot certification and future careers in areas like first responder support, precision agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and data analytics.

Helping Hands Headed South: Dayton Students Rebuilding After Hurricane

A group of eight Dayton Christian School students and four adult chaperones are gearing up to travel to Jamaica in early January to lend a hand in hurricane recovery efforts with their sister school community. The mission trip comes after Hurricane Melissa caused significant damage to the Caribbean island. This year’s team will work alongside partners on the ground to help rebuild and restore parts of the school that were damaged, bringing tools, labor, and compassion to their neighbors abroad. For many of these young volunteers, this trip is not just about construction — it’s about learning, serving, and building lasting friendships beyond Dayton.

Starting January 1, Dayton neighbors will see a $5 increase in vehicle registration and renewal fees. The adjustments are part of the state’s most recent operating budget and are expected to bring in about $62.5 million a year to help fund patrol operations that have not had a fee increase in over 20 years. This update acts as a vital "lifeline" for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, ensuring our local troopers have the resources they need to keep our Miami Valley roads safe and support our neighborhood police departments.

Fairborn officials plan to remove the traffic signal at Maple Avenue and Whittier Avenue after studies showed traffic has dropped significantly since Baker Middle School closed. The light, installed in 1971, is past its typical lifespan, and replacing it with stop signs on Whittier Avenue is expected to better match current traffic patterns. City leaders say the change will also reduce long-term maintenance costs while keeping the intersection safe for drivers. After a 90-day review period with stop signs in place, the signal will be permanently removed if no issues arise.

Starting January 4, the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority is making a few small service adjustments aimed at improving travel for riders based on feedback from drivers and passengers. Route 44 will take a new path to better serve the FedEx Ground Center while still keeping all current stops, and Routes 18, 19, 22, 43 and 44 will see slight time changes on their schedules. The popular Flyer service will now end at 10 PM Monday through Thursday rather than running until midnight, so riders should plan their evenings accordingly.
