Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton has been struck by significant tornadoes more than once - in May 2019, a historic outbreak of 14 tornadoes struck the Dayton metro in a single night, with a powerful EF4 twister cutting through the Trotwood and Harrison Township areas and causing the most destructive tornado damage the city had seen in decades.

Inside Today’s Edition…

  • $1 million is headed to Dayton's largest men's shelter for upgrades.

  • Two local stores just hit the top tier of a health rewards program.

  • Dragons Stadium is hosting a blood drive with a ballpark view.

DAYTON DIGEST

🏠 $1 Million Headed to Dayton's Men's Shelter
A $1 million Community Funding Project advanced out of the House Appropriations Committee to renovate the Gettysburg Gateway Shelter for Men at 1921 S. Gettysburg Ave., U.S. Rep. Mike Turner announced. The money will fund a new engagement unit, a medical unit for men not yet able to be around the general public, and transitional housing for men working toward permanent housing. The shelter, owned by the city and operated by Homefull, houses more than 1,800 men annually. Dayton Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss said the funding will help "provide dignity for those who rely on the shelter."

🏪 Two Local Stores Just Hit the Top Health Tier
Local retailers can earn real money for promoting public health, and two Dayton-area stores just proved it. Ameristop in Huber Heights and Westside Supermarket on Germantown Street in Dayton have both reached Platinum level, the highest tier in the Retailers CARE program run by the Montgomery County ADAMHS board since 2023. If they maintain that status, each store stands to receive a $7,200 reimbursement for store upgrades. The program rewards stores for things like removing age-restricted product ads from their windows, rather than only punishing them for selling tobacco, alcohol, and lottery tickets.

A Different Kind of Home Run for Dayton

Blood donations are needed every day to help patients undergoing trauma care, surgeries, cancer treatments, and treatment for chronic illnesses, and local hospitals depend on volunteer donors to keep that supply available. That's why the Dayton Dragons and Versiti Blood Center of Ohio are partnering for the second of four community blood drives being held this year at the new South Dayton Toyota Diamond Club inside Day Air Ballpark. The blood drive runs Wednesday, July 15, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and every donor will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the ballpark, a photo on the field, and a Dragons prize pack valued at more than $50, including two game tickets, a 25th Season commemorative poster, and a Dragons hat. Donors will also receive a Versiti water bottle and enjoy hot dogs as part of the post-donation refreshments, while supplies last. The event is part of a three-year partnership between the Dragons and Versiti to make donating blood easier and encourage more people across the Miami Valley to help maintain a safe, reliable blood supply. Appointments are encouraged, and anyone 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) who meets the donation requirements can participate. Free parking will also be available in several lots surrounding the ballpark, making it easy for neighbors to stop by and give back.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking drivers to park in well-lit spots, secure all windows and doors, remove or hide valuables, and keep keys on hand at all times. The reminders come as Vehicle Theft Prevention Month continues and follow a summer that has already seen an uptick in local vehicle thefts, with Huber Heights Police urging residents to stay alert.

Greater Dayton RTA will make minor service adjustments starting July 19 on Routes 2, 9, 6, X6, 12, 18, 19, and 22.
