Good evening, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know…Dayton’s NCR invented the "carbonless" copy paper that revolutionized offices worldwide? In 1954, local chemists perfected a process called micro-encapsulation, where tiny bubbles of dye burst when you write on the page, creating a copy without the messy black carbon sheets.

Thick brush, tangled woods, and overgrown acres don’t just make your property look neglected—they limit how you can use your land. Trails disappear. Space gets wasted. And clearing it by hand feels impossible. That’s where Buckeye Land Services comes in.
We now provide high-power forestry mulching, the fastest and cleanest way to reclaim your land without damaging the soil. Our equipment pulverizes brush, vines, saplings, and undergrowth on the spot, turning it into nutrient-rich mulch that improves your soil while leaving your property clean, open, and instantly usable. No burning. No piles. No hauling. Just transformation.
Whether you’re carving out new trails, expanding your yard, prepping for a future build, or finally taking back acreage that’s been untouched for years, our team delivers professional, efficient clearing that dramatically improves visibility, access, and property value. DAYTON DIGEST
🎙️ Celebrate MLK Day Across Dayton
Dayton and surrounding communities are gearing up for a rich lineup of events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on and around Monday, January 19. Activities include marches, a free community skate at RiverScape, a noon program at Wayne High School in Huber Heights, a banquet to celebrate King’s legacy, and plenty of chances to reflect with neighbors. Whether you’re planning to march, learn, or just take part in local traditions, there’s something for many ages and interests.
🎵 Dayton Funk Center Finds New Home in Trotwood
The long-running effort to preserve Dayton’s funk music heritage has taken a big step forward with plans to locate the Funk Music Hall of Fame & Exhibition Center at the former Salem Mall site in Trotwood. After several years without a permanent museum space, the move (part of a broader Sears redevelopment project), means the center can expand educational programs, exhibits, and community arts events. President and CEO David R. Webb continues to champion the region’s influential music history through media programming and outreach while the physical venue takes shape.
🏘️ $6.9M Boost for Affordable Housing Initiatives
CareSource and Huntington Bank secured a $6.9 million grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati’s Affordable Housing Program to support renovation, construction, and emergency repair efforts across Ohio, including in the Dayton region. The funding aims to make housing more accessible for low- to moderate-income households while supporting broader community stability. Officials emphasize that expanding affordable housing improves quality of life and economic opportunity for families locally.

Big Wins for Local Colleges
Wright State University has received a $3 million grant that will support advanced research and workforce development efforts tied to national defense and innovation. University leaders say the funding strengthens Dayton’s long-standing role in aerospace and defense while creating new learning and career pathways for students. It is another sign of Wright State’s growing impact beyond campus and into the region’s economy.
Sinclair College has been awarded $1.145 million to expand hands-on manufacturing education and training programs. The funding will help modernize equipment and prepare students for in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing across the Miami Valley. College officials say the investment directly supports local employers while giving students practical skills that lead to good-paying jobs.

Dayton’s Playground Gets a Second Chance
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, neighbors are raising funds to rebuild the playground at Bomberger Park after it was destroyed in a suspected arson last summer. The original play structures and equipment, a place where local families once gathered and kids played—were badly damaged, leaving a gap in this East Dayton neighborhood’s shared spaces. Local volunteer Justine Kelly and others helped lead the fundraising effort, and thanks to contributions from residents and grant support, enough money has now been gathered to move forward with a larger, improved playground. The city supports the effort too, and with equipment expected to be ordered in February, construction should begin soon, giving Dayton children a safe, joyful place to play again this spring. It’s a powerful reminder of what happens when neighbors come together to turn heartbreak into hope and progress.

Adopted through Miami Valley Pit Crew, this handsome pup now gives back in his own way. He even has “Kooper’s Jar” at the farm to raise donations for the rescue that helped him find his forever home. Visitors can’t miss him, always on patrol, tail wagging, making sure everyone feels right at home in his corner of the farm 🌾.
Every morning, Kooper greets the day (and his people) with a big, toothy grin 😁 before heading out to “supervise” farm chores. Whether he’s trotting alongside Brenda through the fields or keeping a watchful eye on the action, this farm dog brings warmth and joy wherever he goes. With his sunny personality and loyal heart, Kooper proves that a happy farm always starts with one very good boy. ❤️
