Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Paul Laurence Dunbar and Orville Wright were classmates at Dayton's Central High School in the late 1880s, which means two of the most consequential figures in American history sat in the same building as teenagers in the same Ohio city.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • Little pantries are making food access barrier-free across the Miami Valley

  • Wright State's Model UN team earns top honors for the 46th consecutive year

  • Overnight lane closures are coming to U.S. 35 through Greene County

🚲 The Brookville Bicycle Man Gave Away Free Bikes Again Today
Dave Nugent, known around town as the Brookville Bicycle Man, held his most recent free bike giveaway this Sunday at 142 June Place in Brookville. Nugent has spent years collecting, repairing, and gifting hundreds of bikes to anyone who needs one, no questions asked. The event was first-come, first-served with a one-bike-per-person limit, and Nugent kindly asked that recipients not resell them. He has also been working with local businesses to install bike racks around the area, and reminded everyone to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

🎓 Wright State's Model UN Team Just Brought Home a National Award
Over 70 Miami Valley high school students stepped into the role of international delegates at Wright State University's annual High School Model United Nations Conference on Saturday, practicing diplomacy, negotiation, and public speaking on real global issues. The event comes on the heels of Wright State's own Model UN program earning the Outstanding Delegation Award at the 2026 National Model U.N. Conference in New York City, placing among the top 20 percent of more than 160 colleges. The program has maintained an annual award streak since its founding in 1970. Little Pantries Are Quietly Feeding the Miami Valley, One Shelf at a Time

Across the Miami Valley, small community pantries stocked with non-perishable food are showing up in front of libraries, storefronts, and neighborhood gathering spots, and they are making a real difference. The newest one just launched at the Fairborn Public Library in Greene County, set up in partnership with Greene County Public Health to reach people who cannot always make it to traditional food pantries during set hours. Health educator Kaci Warren said the pantries are designed to be completely barrier-free, filling gaps for families who struggle with transportation or scheduling. In the Dayton area, Michael Knote of the nonprofit Have a Gay Day runs a little pantry that serves 20 to 30 people a day, and recently expanded to include pet food. Whether it is a full meal, a side dish, or a cold drink in the summer, these small boxes are proving that sometimes the simplest ideas carry the biggest impact.
