🏋️ This Kettering Grad Is Representing Dayton on the World CrossFit Stage
Capt. Marie Docken, a Kettering Fairmont High School graduate, competed last month with the Army Warrior Fitness Team at the Rebel Renegade Games CrossFit Semifinal in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the team finished fifth. Her athletic foundation started in the pool at Fairmont, where she still holds the district record in the 100 breaststroke, and that same discipline followed her to West Point and eventually onto the Army's competitive CrossFit team. She became a full-time member of the team in 2024 and is now based at Fort Knox, Kentucky, just three hours from home.

The crowd included first-timers like Jenna Gore from Columbus, who stumbled across the show while driving home and stayed for the whole afternoon, alongside 22-year regulars Frank and Adam Viceli of Indianapolis, who have made this an annual father-son tradition. Gates open for Day 2 at 9 a.m. with flying starting around 10 a.m.
🏥 A New Therapy Center Is Coming to Dayton, and One 10-Year-Old Helped Break Ground
Dayton Children's Hospital broke ground Friday on the Charles D. Berry Center for Developmental Therapies, a two-story facility coming to 433 Valley St., directly across from the main campus. The center will bring together pediatric speech, occupational, and physical therapy alongside autism screenings and mental health services for young children. Over the past five years, the number of kids receiving developmental services at Dayton Children's has doubled, according to President and CEO Debbie Feldman. The Charles D. Berry Foundation is contributing $4 million to kick things off, with an additional $1 million gift and a $2 million community challenge announced at Friday's ceremony. Doors are expected to open in Spring 2028.

Dayton's Blue Stars Mothers Brought Lunch, Bingo, and a Lot of Heart to the VA

Some of the best things that happen in this community never make the front page. Blue Stars Mothers Miami Valley Chapter 3 organized a luncheon for veterans living in the domiciliary at the Dayton VA Medical Center, serving up a hot meal, a round of bingo, and something that can be hard to put into words, the feeling of being remembered. The group visits regularly, because they believe the men and women who gave so much deserve to know that Dayton hasn't forgotten them. This time, volunteers from Channel 2 came alongside the mothers as part of the station's community service day, rolling up their sleeves and serving the meal themselves. Every veteran walked away with a flag pin and a bag of goodies. But if you ask anyone who was in that room, the real gift was a lot simpler than that. It was a reminder that their community still sees them, still honors them, and still shows up.
