How to Save on Your Winter Heating Bill
With temperatures dropping in the Miami Valley, many residents are wondering the best way to keep heating costs low this season. Experts say that constantly turning your heat completely on and off throughout the day might actually cost you more in the long run. Instead, it is better to set a consistent temperature and only lower the setting slightly when you are away or sleeping, preferably using a programmable thermostat.

Don’t Let Frozen Pipes Ruin Your Winter
Local experts are urging Miami Valley homeowners to take precautions now to prevent costly and stressful pipe damage this winter. As temperatures drop below freezing, unprotected pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls are at risk of bursting. Make sure to insulate vulnerable pipes and consider keeping a small, steady drip from your faucets on the coldest nights to relieve pressure.

Heads up, Dayton riders! The Greater Dayton RTA is implementing a few minor service adjustments starting January 4, 2026, primarily to improve efficiency and responsiveness to customer feedback. The most notable change is a slight routing adjustment to Route 44, which will now better serve the FedEx Ground Center via Deer Run Road and Old Springfield Street. Additionally, Routes 18, 19, 22, 43, and the Flyer will see small time adjustments, and the Flyer’s late-night service will now end at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Although these are minor tweaks, riders should check the RTA website for updated schedules, especially since fixed-route fares are also increasing to $2.40 per ride on January 1.

Montgomery County is taking a big step toward a cleaner and safer community by requiring that all loads of waste transported to the Solid Waste District Transfer and Recycling Center be secured with a tarp starting in January 2026. This new rule applies to both commercial haulers and everyday residents bringing items in open trucks or trailers to the facility in Moraine. The initiative is a direct response to loose litter and debris that poses a danger to drivers and requires countless volunteer hours to clean from our roadways. County leaders emphasized that the goal is not to issue fines, but to encourage a change in behavior and foster a collective responsibility for a cleaner environment.
