DAYTON DIGEST
βΈοΈ MetroParks Ice Rink Closed Again Amid Warm Weather
Just as skaters were ready to glide back out, warmer temperatures have caused the ice rink at RiverScape MetroPark to temporarily close again. Crews are closely monitoring conditions to keep the ice safe before reopening. When weather allows, the rink remains a winter favorite for families, friends, and date nights. Be sure to check MetroParksβ website or social media for the latest updates before heading downtown.
ποΈ Holiday Returns Are Already Rolling In
Many Dayton-area shoppers are starting their gift returns earlier than usual this year. Retailers are seeing an uptick as people exchange sizes, colors, or duplicate gifts. Experts recommend checking store return policies closely, especially for extended holiday deadlines. Keeping receipts and original packaging can make the process smoother.
π A Greener Goodbye for Christmas Trees
If your Christmas tree has seen its last twinkle, sustainable disposal options are available across the Miami Valley. Several communities and organizations are offering tree recycling and drop-off programs to keep trees out of landfills. Some trees are turned into mulch or used for conservation projects. It is an easy way to wrap up the holidays while helping the environment.

Serving Those Who Serve: A Home-Cooked Christmas for Daytonβs Heroes

Almost 200 Dayton-area first responders spent Christmas walking into Antioch Shrine Temple not for a call, but for a hot, homemade meal made just for them. The local Shriners group, through its Feeding First Responders effort, laid out banquet-style tables loaded with comfort food so on-duty police, firefighters, dispatchers, and hospital staff could grab as many plates as they needed over two days. The idea started years ago with a Shriner mentor and was adopted by Bruce Baughman, who wanted to thank the people protecting his business, the temple, and the wider Dayton community. This year, organizers say the number of people fed has doubled, and any leftover food is being shared with neighbors in need, keeping the spirit of giving going beyond the holiday shift. For first responders who rarely get holidays off, the gesture adds a little extra cheer to a long workday and reminds them that Dayton sees, appreciates, and stands behind them.

From Compassion to Action: Dayton Youth Tackle Hygiene Gap

The Brighten Initiative is putting a big heart behind a simple idea: every young person deserves basic hygiene, no matter where they sleep at night. Founded in 2024 by Olentangy High School seniors Hersh Gandhi and Videesh Veeragandham, after Gandhi researched health inequities at the Ohio Attorney Generalβs Office, the student-led nonprofit now includes around 100 youth volunteers and dozens of adult supporters who assemble hygiene kits for shelters and community organizations across central Ohio. These kits are filled with essentials like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and shaving cream. To date, the group has raised and distributed more than 10,000 hygiene products while partnering with seven shelters and the national nonprofit I Support the Girls. As Brighten has grown, the teens have expanded their work through Brighten Youth in Action, bringing simple, preventive health and hygiene lessons into local elementary schools and community programs so that kids leave with lifelong tools, not just one-time supplies.
It is a powerful reminder that some of Daytonβs brightest solutions are coming from its own youth, who are turning compassion into action and inviting the rest of the community to pitch in.
