Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know…Dayton is considered the "Funk Capital of the World"? During the 1970s, the city produced legendary funk bands like The Ohio Players, Slave, and Zapp & Roger.

Inside Today’s Edition…

  • Millions in new funding support homelessness services across local counties.

  • Dayton ranks high nationally for workforce readiness and opportunity.

  • Price Stores announces closure after serving Dayton for 75 years.

Thick brush, tangled woods, and overgrown acres don’t just make your property look neglected—they limit how you can use your land. Trails disappear. Space gets wasted. And clearing it by hand feels impossible. That’s where Buckeye Land Services comes in.

We now provide high-power forestry mulching, the fastest and cleanest way to reclaim your land without damaging the soil. Our equipment pulverizes brush, vines, saplings, and undergrowth on the spot, turning it into nutrient-rich mulch that improves your soil while leaving your property clean, open, and instantly usable. No burning. No piles. No hauling. Just transformation.

Whether you’re carving out new trails, expanding your yard, prepping for a future build, or finally taking back acreage that’s been untouched for years, our team delivers professional, efficient clearing that dramatically improves visibility, access, and property value. The difference is night-and-day—and most projects are completed in a single day.

Serving landowners across the Miami Valley, we bring the right equipment, the right technique, and the local expertise to make your land work for you again.

State Funding Expands Homelessness Support Across Local Counties
Ohio is putting $18.7 million toward homelessness prevention, emergency shelter and rapid rehousing programs across the state — and agencies in Montgomery, Miami and Greene counties are among the local recipients. Grants will help shelters like Family Promise of Greene County, Serve City in Hamilton, and Miami County’s Franklin House and Buckeye House offer more beds, case management and housing placement support. In Montgomery County, Homefull, YWCA Dayton and the Artemis Center will use funding to help about 300 households secure stable housing over the next two years. State officials say the effort could help more than 25,000 Ohioans facing housing instability, bringing extra support to people in our community who need it most.

Aisles Full of Smiles: Miamisburg Kids Shop Side-by-Side With Local Heroes

The City of Miamisburg turned an ordinary shopping trip into something special with its recent “Shop with a Hero” event at the Meijer on North Springboro Pike. Local children were paired with real-life local heroes, giving them the chance to pick out Christmas gifts while spending meaningful time with the first responders who serve their neighborhoods every day. The program, supported by donations from the Miamisburg Police Foundation and other community partners, focused on building trust and connection just as much as spreading holiday cheer. For families who participated, it eased some holiday stress while creating memories that go far beyond what fit in a shopping cart.

New Program Seeks to Keep Ohio Farmland Thriving for Generations

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) just announced a new grant program designed to help county governments plan and protect farmland across the state, a move that matters for farmers and communities here in the Dayton region and beyond. This initiative makes $1 million available to assist counties with developing or updating Land Use Plans and Farmland Preservation Plans that aim to balance economic growth with protecting working agricultural land. Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Ohio’s economy — contributing billions annually — and these planning efforts will help counties work with farmers, soil and water conservation districts, and local partners to keep farmland in productive use and strengthen local economies. With applications due by Feb. 27, 2026, this program opens the door for more proactive community planning and stronger collaboration between local governments and agricultural stakeholders. It’s a timely step toward preserving Ohio’s rich farming heritage while supporting vibrant rural communities right here in the Dayton-area region.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Flyers Fly High in 84–61 Win Over North Florida

The University of Dayton Flyers lit up UD Arena with an 84–61 victory over North Florida, thrilling fans on a night honoring Hall of Famer Obi Toppin and 1993 graduate Johnny Davis. De’Shayne Montgomery led all scorers with 23 points, while Amaël L’Etang recorded a career-high 14 rebounds and 14 points, and Malcolm Thomas added 14 points, including four dunks and a new career high. Senior Javon Bennett contributed 10 points, while Keonte Jones, Jordan Derkack, and Bryce Heard helped push the Flyers’ lead with strong defensive and offensive efforts. Dayton’s 18–0 run early in the game set the tone, and the team’s stifling defense — eight blocks, including four by Thomas — ensured the win. With this victory, the Flyers improve to 8–3 on the season, keeping fans excited for the rest of non-conference play.

Next game: The Flyers return to UD Arena today, December 16, at 7 p.m., to take on Florida State.
