🏥 A Nearby Hospital System Just Got Bigger
Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon has signed a letter of intent to join Kettering Health, according to a release from KCH. The hospital says the decision followed more than 800 hours of onsite and virtual meetings over nearly a year of planning. If a final agreement is reached, Kettering Health has committed to capital investments over the next 10 years in KCH's service area, including a new electronic health records system, along with continued employment for current KCH staff. The goal is a definitive agreement by fall, with the deal completed by the end of 2026.
🎗️ Free Mobile Screenings Roll Through The Miami Valley
Premier Health is bringing its mobile mammography coach to communities across the Miami Valley throughout August, offering both 2D and 3D screening technology. The unit, owned and operated by Atrium Medical Center, aims to make routine mammograms more convenient for women with full schedules. Stops include Xenia, Liberty Township, Dayton, Covington, Monroe, Springboro, Lebanon, Trenton and Versailles throughout the month. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 855-887-7364 or visiting Premier Health's website.
📚 Nearly 100 Classes For Lifelong Learners This Fall
The University of Dayton's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute opens fall registration at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, welcoming adults 50 and older back into the classroom. The term runs Sept. 14 through Nov. 6 and features nearly 100 seminars on everything from genealogy and gardening to travel, technology and small-business development. Most sessions meet once a week for two hours and are led by volunteer moderators, including UD faculty and retired educators. Classes are held at Daniel J. Curran Place on UD's River Campus, with online options also available.
Harrison Twp. Sent Kids Back To School With A Little Extra Confidence
Before the first bell of the school year even rings, dozens of Harrison Twp. families spent a Sunday morning making sure their kids felt ready for it. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office partnered with the Montgomery County Drug-Free Coalition and Harrison Twp. to host the free Back 2 School Bash at the Harrison Twp. Community Center, offering free haircuts, food, games, a SWAT truck display and school supplies. The Aug. 2 event ran from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and leaned on local volunteers, staff and community donors to pull it off. Organizers said the goal was simple: help students start the year with a little more confidence. It's the kind of quiet, neighbor-helping-neighbor effort that says something about this community long after the backpacks are packed.

Ohio Senator Jon Husted has introduced a second part of the Children Harmed by AI Technology (CHAT) Act, aiming to set federal rules for how AI companion chatbots interact with minors. The bill would prohibit chatbots from impersonating humans or licensed professionals, engaging minors in manipulative or romantic-style interactions, or exposing them to other harmful content. It would also require age verification and stronger parental controls, including notifying parents if a child shows signs of distress in a conversation.
