La Monarca Tacos and Ice Cream
A husband and wife built this one from scratch: he is from Jordan, she is from Michoacan, and they met because he kept coming back to her ice cream shop. Now their Linden Avenue spot serves birria tacos with a rich, beefy consomme for dipping alongside 24 flavors of housemade ice cream, from pistachio to tequila. A true only-in-Dayton love story you can taste.

🧵 Shop Handmade, and Help End Period Poverty
The 7th annual Shop for Dignity fair returns to the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia on Saturday, Aug. 15 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, Aug. 16 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). More than 60 vendors will fill the space with handcrafted goods, home décor, baked goods, candles, and woodworking. Admission is $3, free for kids 12 and under, and every menstrual hygiene product you bring takes $1 off your ticket and earns a door prize. Proceeds support Providing for Women, a Greene County nonprofit fighting period poverty, whose founder Lisa Jordan notes that in Ohio, 1 in 6 women cannot afford basic menstrual products.
📚 A $50,000 Boost for the Library's Littlest Visitors
The Centerville Noon Optimist Club just handed the Washington-Centerville Public Library one of its biggest gifts of the year: a $50,000 check, presented during the club's weekly meeting at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace. With the library in the middle of major renovations, the money will fund three different children's areas, adding indoor and outdoor interactive elements and new equipment. "It made perfect sense for us because we're all about youth," said club president Sarah Umbreit. Library director Liz Fultz says the goal is a space where families feel comfortable and kids want to stay, explore, and learn.
🏠 Daybreak Makes Room for Parents and Babies
For the first time in 10 years, Daybreak of Dayton is expanding, thanks to a $270,000 Lowe's Community Impact Grant. The nonprofit, which shelters homeless youth across the Dayton area, will convert underused space into a new wing for young people ages 10 to 17, freeing up its current minor wing to become a family-centered environment for parents, babies, and toddlers. "The need for dedicated space for pregnant and parenting individuals continues to grow," said Daybreak CEO Courtney Patel. The gift is part of Lowe's final year of a 5-year, $100 million mission to revitalize hometowns, which this year reached 100 nonprofits nationwide.
Spend Friday Night at Runway Fest With Planes, Music & Fireworks
For one night this Friday, Aug. 14, the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Miamisburg hands its runway over to the public for Runway Fest, a free evening of aircraft, live music, and fireworks. From 6 to 10 p.m., you can walk the airfield past aircraft displays, take a tour, grab dinner from the food trucks, and turn the kids loose on inflatables while roving entertainers work the crowd. The Karate Girls keep the music going all evening, building toward the moment everyone comes for: a full fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Both admission and parking are free, so all you really need to bring are a few chairs, a blanket, and someone to share the show with. Put on by the City of Dayton, Miami Township, and the Dayton International Airport, it is a fitting way for the birthplace of aviation to spend a summer night, heads tilted back, watching the sky.
