📚 Dayton's youngest philanthropists just donated hundreds of books
Preschoolers at Primrose School on Yankee and Primrose School of Beavercreek wrapped up their annual book drive this week, collecting close to 850 books for the Ronald McDonald House and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Foster Care Department. The drive has been running since 2021, and across all those years, these two schools have donated more than 387,600 books to organizations around Dayton.
🔬 Wright State student's Parkinson's research earns national spotlight
Christina Minassian, a graduate student in biological sciences at Wright State University, just won the school's Three-Minute Thesis Competition, earning a spot at the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools Conference in Kansas City to compete at the regional level. Her research focuses on Parkinson's disease, the world's second most common neurodegenerative disorder, and specifically on a protein called α-synuclein that can misfold and clump in the brain. Minassian is studying 18 genes that may explain how the sporadic form of Parkinson's, which has no known cause, actually develops. She graduates this May and has applied to Wright State's Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program.
🐾 137 animals rescued, some are now ready for their forever homes
After a court granted the Humane Society of Greater Dayton full custody of 137 animals removed from a Dayton home in poor condition, the organization immediately got to work on rehabilitation. The animals included 92 guinea pigs, chinchillas, cockatiels, a frog, a hamster, and more, many with serious health issues from neglect. Marketing and PR manager Jessica Garringer says the Humane Society sees cases like this 500 to 600 times each year, and their approach goes beyond just rescuing animals. They also work to connect owners with mental health resources. Some of the animals have already recovered and are now available for adoption.
