TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's Huffman Dam, built as part of the 1913 flood control system in what is now Riverside, is one of the largest earthen dry dams in the world - it holds back no permanent reservoir but is designed to temporarily contain an enormous volume of floodwater, and most people who drive past it on Route 4 have no idea what they're looking at.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • A free community meal returns to Edgemont next week, open to everyone.

  • Sinclair College is opening applications for a free small business program.

  • A popular Dayton Canoe Club trail section is closing for repairs.

FOODIE FRIDAY

Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of must‑try spots is here!

Toasted Brunch Bar + Cafe
Serves globally inspired brunch daily, from shakshuka to a stacked breakfast sandwich. Pair it with a Spicy Pineapple Margarita or a fresh-baked scone from the bakery case. It is Beavercreek's newest go-to for a leisurely morning.

📍2733 Fairfield Cmns Unit C, Beavercreek📍

Ned Peppers Bar
Ned Peppers has anchored Dayton's Oregon District since 1994, serving beer and spirits inside a western-themed bar with an island-inspired tiki bar built in. Open 365 days a year with a rotating craft beer lineup and a menu of bar bites to match, it's one of downtown's longest-running nightlife spots. Stop in for a drink and soak up some Oregon District history.

📍419 E 5th St, Dayton📍

Sea Jax Tavern
Owned by Ron and Christy Sweeney since 2014, Sea Jax Tavern turns a former Pizza Hut into one of Kettering's go-to seafood spots. The clam chowder gets rave reviews around town, and the fried oysters, fish tacos, and grouper fingers keep regulars coming back. It's the kind of neighborhood tavern where the servers know your order.

📍5900 Bigger Rd, Kettering📍

📈 A Free Path to Growing Your Small Business
Sinclair College is opening applications for its seventh round of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, a free course that has already helped 123 local business owners sharpen their strategy and grow. Instead of hypothetical case studies, participants spend the summer working on their own businesses, backed by over 100 hours of curriculum and a team of business advisors. It pays off too: within six months, two out of three graduates report increased revenue. Applications for Cohort 7 are open through the end of January 2027, with classes running Thursdays from May through August.

🚴 A Familiar Trail Spot Is Taking a Detour
The Great Miami River Recreation Trail will temporarily close above the Dayton Canoe Club clubhouse starting July 20, with a detour guiding trail users around the closed stretch for about 30 days. Crews will replace worn concrete decking and fix drainage issues that have let water seep into the clubhouse over the years. The northbound side of Riverside Drive will also see temporary closures for construction access, with regular trail traffic expected back by late August.

A Free Meal Table Where Everyone Has a Seat

Sometimes a community meal is about more than what's on the plate. On Wednesday, July 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Five Rivers Health Centers' Edgemont Campus will host a free community meal open to families, seniors, patients, neighbors, and everyone in the community. The meal is provided by Food For The Journey Project, a mobile response to hunger that serves free, nutritious meals to hungry families throughout the Dayton community, with support from the Miami Valley Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. The event will take place at 721 Miami Chapel Road, and the invitation is simple: everyone is welcome. It's a small but meaningful reminder that sometimes community care looks like pulling up a chair and sharing a meal together.
