TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Dayton area's natural gas infrastructure was built out in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to serve the region's industrial base, and the pipeline networks that supplied factory boilers and residential furnaces helped shape the development patterns of neighborhoods and suburbs in ways that are now invisible but still present in the utility easements and line routes that run through every community in the metro.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • Threads of Miami Valley is hosting a free clothing giveaway on May 16 and anyone can show up

  • 75 Montgomery County students turned Pringles cans and Kleenex boxes into award-winning art

  • Six Springfield firefighters are being honored by Ohio for running into a burning building

Angelina came home from a three day family trip to find sewage rising out of her basement into her shower and toilet. Four to five inches of it.

She called Advantage Plumbing Heating & Air. Dustin and Ramsey showed up, diagnosed the problem, snaked the drain and the foundation line, and walked her through everything they were doing step by step. She now requests those two technicians by name every time she calls.

That's who you're dealing with.

Right now Advantage is offering $89 drain clearing with a one year guarantee. Every job includes a free camera inspection of your pipes so you know exactly what you're dealing with. If they find something, you get an honest estimate. No pressure, no obligation.

A slow drain won't fix itself. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.

FOODIE FRIDAY

Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of must‑try spots is here!

La Embajada - Artisan Argentinian Cuisine
A near-perfect-rated Argentinian gem that brings the bold flavors of South America to the Dayton area. The empanadas and chimichurri steak are the headliners, but everything on the menu is made with real artistry.

Mudlick Tap House
A laid-back gastropub with a great tap selection and food that stands on its own. The rotating craft beers and elevated bar menu make it worth a regular visit.

πŸ“110 W Franklin St, DaytonπŸ“

Loose Ends Brewing
A local craft brewery with rotating taps, a food menu that complements the beers perfectly, and a patio built for lingering. Try the seasonal ales with their pretzel bites and stay for the second round.

πŸ‘— This Local Nonprofit Is Turning Donated Clothes Into Confidence
Threads of Miami Valley is opening its doors on Friday, May 16, from 10AM to noon for a free outdoor shopping event. No appointment, no paperwork, no catch. The nonprofit has been quietly dressing kids and adults across the community for years, and executive director JoBeth Hopp puts it simply: when you feel good about what you're wearing, everything else gets a little easier. The event will mainly feature women's clothing but anyone in need is welcome to stop by and take what they need.

🎨 These Dayton Kids Turned Trash Into Trophy-Worthy Art
More than 75 students from Montgomery County schools arrived at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery on May 2 ready to make something out of nothing. The 2026 Montgomery County Environmental Services Recycled Art Contest challenged kids from kindergarten through 12th grade to sculpt original pieces using only recyclable materials, from Pringles containers and plastic spoons to fruit pouch lids and Kleenex boxes. First place in the oldest individual division went to Alaina Osterday of Centerville High School for her piece "Thru the Ages," while the team top spot went to Avery Stratton, Mack Hawkins, and Elana Musselman of Evangel Academy for "Save the Turtles."

πŸ›οΈ Your Mailbox Can Feed a Neighbor This Saturday
The nation's largest single-day food drive is happening this Saturday, May 9, and participating could not be simpler: fill a bag with non-perishable items, set it by your mailbox before your mail arrives, and your letter carrier takes it from there. The Stamp Out Hunger drive is hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, and all local donations go to The Foodbank, Inc., which distributes through a network of over 120 partner agencies across Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties. According to The Foodbank, 1 in 6 people in the Miami Valley face food insecurity, and last year's local drive collected over 66,000 pounds of food.

In the Face of Fire and Collapse, Six Ohio Firefighters Chose Courage

When a fire broke out on Broadway Street in Springfield in 2025, six members of the Springfield Fire Rescue Division did what most people can't imagine: they ran in. With ceilings collapsing, fire advancing, and no hose line in place, Tyler Baughman, Cody Cooper, Tyler King, Will Lawson, Jared Ryan, and Nick Woolever pushed forward in an attempt to rescue two young children trapped inside the home, and four of them were injured in the effort. This Tuesday, May 12, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal and the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS will present all six with the Fire Service Valor Award at the 45th annual Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame and Awards at COSI in Columbus.

On top of those individual honors, Springfield Fire Rescue has been named Ohio Fire Department of the Year for its investment in training, community risk reduction, and consistent emergency response across one of the state's most demanding service areas.
