Good evening, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the city of Riverside, which borders Dayton to the east and wraps around part of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, was incorporated in 1952 largely because residents wanted local control over zoning decisions as the base expanded - making defense policy a direct driver of municipal boundaries in the Dayton metro.
Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:
Pumpkins fly more than 3,000 feet at Wright-Patterson on October 24.
1,600 students filled UD Arena for a day about mental health.
Five books read can earn a kid a Monster Jam ticket.

DAYTON DIGEST
💚 1,600 Students, One Message at UD Arena
About 1,600 students from 28 Dayton-area middle and high schools filled UD Arena for a pep rally about mental health, put together by CareSource and University of Dayton Athletics. The day mixed on-court competitions and time with Dayton Flyers student-athletes with a panel of local mental health experts moderated by Brandon Saho. CareSource awarded $10,000 each to National Trail Local Schools, West Carrollton Middle School, and Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School through its Healthy Minds, Bright Futures program. Flyers coach Anthony Grant spoke about Jay’s Light, the fund he created in honor of his daughter, which benefited from a charity exhibition game against Notre Dame on Saturday, October 17.
🎶 Seven Bands, One Porch on Wilburn Avenue
Seven bands played from a porch on Wilburn Avenue on Saturday, October 17 for Babaloui Porchfest. Robert Mock has hosted it for four years, and this time he teamed up with Kathy Leggett, co-founder of the Dayton Music Scene. Every dollar raised goes to the Gift of Love, part of For Love of Children Charity (FLOC), which its website says serves over 12,000 children a year in southwestern Ohio. Mock and Leggett are already planning next year’s.
📚 Read Five Books, Earn a Monster Jam Ticket
Kids who read at least five books can earn a free child’s ticket to Monster Jam at the Wright State University Nutter Center, with the purchase of an adult ticket. Families pick up a Monster Jam Reward Club Card at one of 14 participating Dayton-area libraries, including Champaign County Library, Clark County Public Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library, then take it to the Nutter Center box office. The vouchers are good for three shows: noon and 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, and noon on Sunday, November 29. Check with your own library first, since requirements and restrictions vary, and vouchers have to be redeemed by November 29.

Eight Pounds of Pumpkins, 3,000 Feet of Air
The Class A machines at Wright-Patterson launch 8 to 10 pound pumpkins more than 3,000 feet across the field behind the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The 22nd annual Pumpkin Chuck is a STEM event run by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Engineering Directorate, open to base personnel and the public. It is free, runs 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, and entry is through the Spinning Road Gate at Spinning and Airway roads.
Class C machines are human powered and built for beginners, and teams can sign up onsite without bringing a device, alongside straw rockets, local competitive robotics teams, food trucks, and a pie-eating contest. In the STEM area, kids can work out expected ranges and speeds for the machines and try kid-friendly versions, with the full schedule at aflcmc.af.mil/pumpkinchuck.
