Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's position at the confluence of three rivers - the Great Miami, the Stillwater, and the Mad River - made it a natural trading crossroads for Indigenous peoples and later for European fur traders, and the Mad River in particular was a key travel corridor connecting the Miami Valley to the Lake Erie basin long before any roads existed.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • Thousands gathered at Welcome Stadium for Dayton's first Black Rodeo this Juneteenth weekend

  • A new fund will keep free books arriving for Montgomery County kids every month

  • A century-old flood-prevention building opens its doors for one free afternoon

DAYTON DIGEST

📚 A new fund means the books keep coming for Montgomery County kids
Dayton Children's Hospital has launched the Imagination Library of Montgomery County Fund, honoring Governor Mike DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine for their support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program locally. Since becoming a local partner in 2019, Dayton Children's has enrolled nearly 49,000 children, sending more than a million books to homes across the county. Kids from birth to age five get a free, age-appropriate book mailed to them every single month, and researchers at the University of Dayton found that kids in the program are read to more often and arrive more ready for kindergarten.

🏛️ A 110-year-old building most of us have never been inside is opening its doors
The Miami Conservancy District is hosting a free open house at its downtown Dayton headquarters on Friday, June 26, from 1 to 3 p.m., with guided tours every half hour. The building was a gift to Dayton from Colonel Edward Deeds, built in just six months after being announced in July 1915, and it still has its original 1916 light fixtures and coffered ceilings intact. Visitors can video call MCD's flood engineers, grab one of six collector's patches, take home a free copy of Flood of Memories, and taste a bit of 1913 flood history with food from the Hamburger Wagon.

🌿 Nature camp just got a lot more affordable for local families
The Little Miami Watershed Network announced that admission to its 2026 Jr. Naturalist Camp has dropped to just $20 per camper, thanks to grants from James Investment Research and The Nick and Edna Weller Charities, Inc. Campers spend their mornings exploring the Little Miami River at Camp Greene in Yellow Springs, and every camper goes home with a Naturalist Explorer Bag full of field guides and outdoor gear. Executive Director Alison Pifer said the support made camp affordable for nearly every family. Registration is open now, but space is limited.

Boots hit the ground at Welcome Stadium for Dayton's first Black Rodeo

Thousands gathered at Welcome Stadium this Juneteenth weekend for Dayton's first-ever Black Rodeo, a celebration of Black cowboy culture built from rodeo competitions, soul food, vendors, live music, and line dancing. Dawn Holloway, founder of the Dayton Black Rodeo, said the event was about showing the full breadth of Black contributions to agriculture and cowboy life, calling it "time that everybody understands that Black people, as a people, have contributed so much." Attendees said holding it during Juneteenth weekend made it even more meaningful, and performer King R-3 connected the gathering to the mayor's "Summer of Peace" effort, calling moments like this exactly what the community needs right now. Local organizations including the NAACP and Central State University set up booths too, with Central State handing out on-the-spot scholarships to students starting their college journeys. Many who attended said they hope this becomes a lasting Dayton tradition.
