This Saturday, 84 Korea, Vietnam, and Cold War era veterans will board the first Honor Flight of the year, traveling to Washington D.C. at no cost to visit their national memorials and witness the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. For many, it will be the first time anyone has formally thanked them for their service, decades after they gave it. The flight returns to Dayton International Airport on Saturday, May 30 at 9:30 p.m., and the public is encouraged to show up. Free parking is available in the garage directly across from the airport entrance, and patriotic attire, signs, and balloons are all welcome.

Dayton VA Celebrates Historic 5-Star Rating as Community Honors Veterans

The Dayton VA Medical Center has received a 5-star rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services for the first time in its history, putting it among the highest-rated hospitals in the country for quality and patient experience. Medical Center Director Jennifer DeFranceseo says the recognition belongs to the entire city, not just the hospital, because Dayton is home to roughly three times more veterans per capita than the average American community. That community showed up in full force this Memorial Day weekend: hundreds of people across all ages turned out at Dayton National Cemetery to place flags on more than 60,000 graves, with Scout troops, baseball teams, and veteran organizations all taking part to keep the tradition alive for the next generation. Over 270 American flags also lined the VA campus for the Avenue of Flags, and the Sons of the American Legion hosted a cookout for inpatient residents.

On Monday at 11 a.m., everyone is welcome at a full military honors ceremony on Monument Hill inside the cemetery, and if you want to keep serving after the weekend, the VA is looking for volunteers on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. to help remove the flags from the graves and the Avenue of Flags at the VA's Administrative Office.

DeFranceseo left readers with the words her team carries every day: a veteran dies twice, once when they pass, and again the last time someone speaks their name.
