Good morning, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Kettering, now a city of about 56,000 people just south of Dayton, was incorporated as its own city in 1955 and named after Charles Kettering - making it one of the few American cities named after a living person at the time of its incorporation.
The inside track on local happenings:
Every Dayton 7th and 8th grader can join the YMCA for free this summer starting June 1.
Wright State University is leading a $2.5 million federal push to bring AI literacy to rural classrooms.
Crayons to Classrooms is adding six new schools this fall and bringing supplies straight to teachers.

The hottest day of the year is the worst time to find out your AC isn't ready for it.
Most breakdowns don't happen randomly. A worn capacitor, low refrigerant, a dirty coil - small problems that went undetected through winter and finally gave out under the pressure of a July heat wave. A failed compressor costs $1,500 to $2,500 to replace. An emergency call runs double the normal rate.
A $99 spring tune-up from Advantage Plumbing Heating & Air catches those problems now, before they become a midsummer emergency.
When Elliot's AC broke right after he bought his house, Advantage came out, found the issue, fixed it, and didn't charge him for the visit. That's who these people are.
4.8 stars. 918 Dayton reviews. They show up, they're honest, and they fix it right the first time.
Book your $99 AC tune-up before April 30th.

DAYTON DIGEST
🏊 14 Dayton YMCA Locations Are Free All Summer for Middle Schoolers
Starting June 1 through August 31, the YMCA of Greater Dayton is offering free memberships to every student entering 7th or 8th grade in fall 2026. Families can walk into any of the 14 Greater Dayton YMCA locations with their student and fill out a free membership application on the spot. Students just need to bring school verification showing the grade they are entering in the fall. Beyond scheduled programs, teens can use the full facilities, shoot hoops, and meet new people all summer long at no cost.
🤖 Wright State Just Scored $2.5 Million to Put AI Education Where It's Needed Most
The U.S. Department of Education awarded Wright State University a $2.5 million grant to bring artificial intelligence education to rural Ohio and rural Kansas. The four-year project, called "Strengthening American Competitiveness with AI Education," targets future teachers and students in Wright State's Instructional Design and Learning Technologies master's program. It is led by computer science professor Cogan Shimizu, who is partnering with Kansas State University on the effort. The goal is to build AI literacy from K-12 through college so graduates are ready for a workforce that increasingly depends on it.
🚗 Keowee Street Is Losing Two Lanes and Gaining Bike Lanes and Wider Sidewalks
Dayton engineers are moving forward with a $2 million safety project on Keowee Street between East Fifth Street and Monument Avenue that will shrink the road from seven lanes down to five, add bike lanes, and widen the sidewalks. The roughly half-mile stretch has long been a problem for pedestrians trying to cross. Construction is expected to begin this summer and finish before winter.

Crayons to Classrooms Is Planting Seeds of Success in Classrooms Across the Miami Valley
There is a quiet crisis happening in classrooms across the Miami Valley. Teachers are reaching into their own pockets, month after month, just to make sure their students have the basics. Crayons to Classrooms has been fighting that reality since 2009, and after nearly two decades of work, they are expanding their reach in a big way. The Dayton nonprofit recently opened a brand new in-school supply closet at National Trail Local School District, eliminating a nearly hour-long drive that teachers used to make just to stock their classrooms. The closet runs exactly like their main store on Woodman Drive, with a real checkout process and core supplies stocked inside, except now it lives right inside the school. A new box truck is also hitting the road to deliver donations directly to schools across the region. And this fall, six new schools will join their network alongside a new district partner.
You can donate, get involved as a backpack booster, or learn more at crayonstoclassrooms.org. You can also visit their store at 1750 Woodman Dr. or call 937-528-6400.
