DAYTON DIGEST
♻️ Shopping Without a Price Tag
A new kind of community space is taking shape in the Oregon District. The Gem City Free Store plans to open in late fall, giving neighbors access to free clothing, books, toys, home goods, and craft supplies while encouraging sustainability and resource sharing. Operated by Gem City Action, the volunteer-run store is renovating a historic building across from Dublin Pub and has already raised $85,000 toward the project. Organizers hope it becomes a welcoming place where people can both give what they can and find what they need.
🥗 A Food Bank That Offers More Than Food
More than 150 people gathered to celebrate The Foodbank's anniversary and the opening of its new $5.5 million Community Resource Center. Along with helping families access food, the center now offers medical services, job resources, and the nation's first probation office located inside a food bank, bringing multiple support services together under one roof. The celebration also included the announcement of a second greenhouse that will provide even more fresh produce for the community through a gift honoring Beverly K. Greene. It is another investment in helping more Dayton families access the resources they need close to home.
🏡 A New Proposal for Foster Care Homes
Dayton leaders are considering a proposal that would cap the number of foster care group homes citywide at 48. The city currently has 62 facilities, more than any other Ohio community on a per-capita basis, according to city officials. Existing homes would continue operating, but no new permits would be issued until the total falls below the proposed limit. City leaders say the goal is to better balance community resources while continuing to support children who need care.

One of Dayton's Tastiest Weekends Is Almost Here

One of Dayton's favorite summer traditions is rolling back into downtown, bringing together more than 30 food trucks for a full day of local flavor and community fun. The Great Dayton Food Truck Rally has grown into one of the region's largest food events, featuring everything from smoked barbecue and international cuisine to handcrafted desserts and local specialties. Beyond the food, visitors can enjoy live music, local vendors, family activities, and free admission, making it a destination for families, friends, and anyone looking to spend the day downtown. The rally also gives dozens of small, locally owned food businesses the opportunity to showcase their menus to thousands of visitors in one place. Whether you're returning for a favorite truck or discovering a new one, the event has become a celebration of Dayton's local food scene and the people who help it thrive.
