🚁 Dayton's Next Drone Hub Might Be at the Airport
Sinclair Community College and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport are joining forces on the future of drones. The partnership, announced Monday, will let Sinclair students and researchers test uncrewed aircraft technology in a real airport setting. CVG plans to lean on Sinclair's aviation programs and faculty to explore future uses like emergency medical deliveries and disaster damage surveys. CVG CEO Larry Krauter called the partnership a "significant milestone" for preparing the airport for what comes next in aviation.
🎯 More Than 80 Teams Chased $6.5 Million in Dayton
The DARPA Lift Challenge wrapped up Sunday at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force after a week of competition. More than 80 teams, ranging from high schoolers to startups, built drones weighing no more than 55 pounds and tried to carry payloads over a 5-nautical-mile course. Teams pushed for a 4-to-1 payload-to-weight ratio, with $6.5 million in prize money on the line. The final four days were free and open to the public, giving spectators a close look at the aircraft in action.
🌭 A New Hot Dog Spot Is Coming to the Oregon District
Whoa Dogs is taking over the former Smokin' Bar-B-Que space at Fifth Street and Wayne Avenue. Owners Jack and Natalie Skilliter, who also helped run the original Corner Kitchen, are finalizing their lease with the city, with a commissioners' vote expected Aug. 12. The menu will feature all-beef hot dogs, house-made chili, and ice cream, with former Corner Kitchen sous chef Michael Kubilius running the shop as general manager. The Skilliters currently live in Portugal but plan to be in Dayton for three weeks to help launch the spot, expected to open in late September.
Dayton Golfers Rally to Help Local Kids Get the Care They Need
Hundreds of golfers gathered in Dayton on Monday for the Dayton Children's Gem City Jam Golf Outing, raising money for developmental therapy programs at Dayton Children's Hospital. The day kicked off with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. Adam Blanchard of Dayton Children's Hospital said therapies like speech and occupational therapy are often needed for life, and the hospital currently has a significant waiting list for care. A silent auction followed around 4:30 p.m., capped off by dinner and golf awards. Hole sponsors and signage throughout the course featured local kids currently receiving care, including 8-year-old Stevie from Lima, Ohio.

CITY HALL
City and Montgomery County commissioners met Monday to review two dozen recommendations for improving safety in downtown Dayton, including more police presence, real-time camera monitoring, and a dedicated RTA police force for Wright Stop Plaza. U.S. Rep. Mike Turner led the working group behind the plan, and U.S. Rep. Phil Plummer said the group is about 75% of the way toward its criminal justice goals. Community organizer Elexus Renner said residents want more say before the recommendations move forward.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
The University of Dayton women's soccer team was picked first in the 2026 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, collecting 188 points and nine first-place votes. Flyers Lauryn Contini, Liv Grenda, Bre Mendoza, and Laney Smith were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, with Grenda earning A10 Midfielder of the Year honors last season. Dayton went a perfect 10-0 in league play a year ago and won the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Next game: Dayton will face West Virginia on the road in Morgantown, W.Va. on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
