Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's Oregon District got its unusual name not from the Pacific Northwest state but from the Oregon Territory - the name was fashionable in the 1840s when the neighborhood was platted, a period when 'Oregon' carried the same frontier romance that 'California' would carry a decade later during the Gold Rush.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • Downtown roads close today through Monday for Celtic Festival weekend

  • New restaurants just opened past airport security

  • Day Air Ballpark already has holiday lights planned for November

☘️ Heading to the Celtic Festival? Plan for Road Closures

Several downtown roads shut down starting 9 a.m. Thursday, July 23 and stay closed through early Monday, July 27 for the United Irish of Dayton Celtic Festival, running July 24 through 26 at RiverScape MetroPark. Monument Avenue between Patterson Boulevard and Jefferson Street closes completely, along with Harries Street and Patterson Boulevard/Riverside Drive between First Street and White Allen Avenue. St. Clair Street and Jefferson Street stay open to local traffic only. If your normal route runs through downtown this weekend, plan for a detour.

πŸ’‰ Free Back-to-School Vaccinations Available for Students

As families get ready for a new school year, Public Health is making it easier to check one more thing off the list. Back-to-school vaccination clinics are being offered to help students meet Ohio's required immunizations before classes begin. Appointments are encouraged, and families are reminded to bring vaccination records, insurance information if available, and a parent or guardian for minors. It's a simple step that can help students start the school year healthy and ready to learn.

✈️ Dayton Airport Gives Travelers More Local Flavor

Dayton International Airport cut the ribbon Wednesday on two new dining spots just past the TSA checkpoint, Warped Wing Brewing Company and Buckeye Pie. The new spots sit alongside Dunkin', forming the first food stop travelers hit after clearing security. Buckeye Pie took over the old Great American Bagel space, while Warped Wing moved into the former Max & Erma's spot. The whole project came from a $2 million investment by Tailwind Hospitality, with two more locations planned for the concourses.

Deck the Diamond Returns to Day Air Ballpark This Winter

Photo Credit: Dayton Dragons Professional Baseball Team, Facebook

Day Air Ballpark is turning into a holiday wonderland again this winter, with Deck the Diamond back for 41 nights between Friday, November 13 and Saturday, January 2. Expect over 1.5 million holiday lights across the Water Street District, plus a synchronized music and light show that fires up every 10 minutes. Families can roast s'mores at fire pits, ride the North Pole Express, write letters to Santa, and snap photos under a 44-foot Christmas tree. General admission runs $13.50, while Dragons season ticket holders and sponsors get in for $10, and the only night it's closed is Christmas Day. Dragons President Robert Murphy called it a chance to turn the ballpark into "a winter wonderland" for families across the community.
