β‘ A Pipeline's Leftover Heat Is Now Lighting Up UD's Campus
The University of Dayton is now pulling much of its electricity from a source most people never picture: heat that escapes a natural gas pipeline. A new facility near Washington Court House, built through a partnership between UD, AES Ohio, Tallgrass, and Kanin Energy, captures that waste heat and runs it through a turbine to generate power for the whole campus. University President Eric Spina said the shift removes about 71% of the school's electricity related carbon footprint, calling it "tremendously exciting." UD is believed to be the first university in the country to power itself this way, and the 15 year deal covers the campus without touching any other AES Ohio customers.
πͺ Kettering Eyes a New Look for a Hometown Favorite
Kettering's draft Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Master Plan includes ideas to modernize the Fraze Pavilion, from better sightlines and seating to an expanded backstage area and a new VIP lounge for season ticket holders. Parks director Bill Tschirhart said the current backstage only has two dressing rooms, which gets tight on nights with multiple headliners. The plan also recommends closing the aging Kettering Ice Arena, and city leaders say a future tax levy could help fund parks improvements once the current facilities bond is paid off in 2028. Nothing is finalized yet, but the draft gives a look at where the city hopes its parks system heads next.
π Kids and Deputies Connect at Camps and a Cookout Across the Miami Valley
Dayton's NCCJ chapter wrapped up its week long PAYT (Police and Youth Together) camp, pairing kids ages 10 to 13 with local law enforcement for hands on lessons, including a look at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office SWAT truck and equipment. Meanwhile in Miamisburg, the city held its first ever Burg Night Out, a free community safety event at Riverfront Park that drew hundreds of neighbors. More than 40 community organizations set up resource booths, and Miamisburg students picked up free back to school supplies while they were there. Organizers say events like these are built to grow trust between first responders and the people they serve.

Meet Rudolph
One Good Samaritan, One Lucky Puppy, One Very Good Boy
There's a certain kind of dog who seems determined to make up for a rough start in life by loving everyone he meets, and Rudolph is exactly that dog. At just six months old, he's already mastered the art of the perfect snuggle. Give him five minutes and he'll convince you he's been part of your family all along.
Rudolph's story starts before he ever set paw in a shelter. He was born to a stray mom who was found and taken in by a Good Samaritan, which means Rudolph never had to spend his early weeks fending for himself on the street. He's been at SICSA for about a month now, and in that short time he's already picked up sit and lay down. For a puppy who started life with the odds stacked against him, he's turned into a genuine people pleaser who just wants to be near you.
