Good evening, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... after the 1913 flood, Dayton became the first city in the United States to build a comprehensive flood control system, a network of retaining basins and levees that has protected the city from major flooding ever since.
Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:
The Dragons are turning an entire homestand into an America 250 celebration.
Middle school students got a hands-on introduction to automotive careers.
A Dayton partnership is serving 200 free meals to neighbors in need.

DAYTON DIGEST
🎆 A six-day America 250 celebration is coming to Day Air Ballpark
The Dayton Dragons and Resonant Sciences are partnering to celebrate America's 250th Anniversary during the team's June 30 through July 5 homestand against the Lansing Lugnuts. The promotion includes patriotic entertainment, historical displays, military tributes, and family activities throughout the week. Fans can also look forward to a July 4 postgame fireworks show, a naturalization ceremony, and a special $17.76 "1776 Ticket Package" that includes a commemorative Dragons hat while supplies last.
🔧 Middle school students got a hands-on look at automotive careers
Students from across the Miami Valley spent part of their summer at Sinclair Community College's Automotive Technology Summer Camp, hosted with Voss Auto Network. Campers practiced skills such as tire changes, oil changes, brake inspections, engine disassembly, and vehicle diagnostics while learning about modern automotive technology. The program is designed to introduce young students to high-demand careers in transportation and the skilled trades through real, hands-on experience.
🌡️ Rumpke is moving collections earlier during the heat wave
Because of forecasted extreme heat, Rumpke Waste & Recycling is temporarily starting residential trash and recycling routes earlier than usual. Customers are asked to place carts at the curb the night before their scheduled pickup day to avoid missing collection. The temporary change is intended to reduce employees' exposure to dangerous afternoon temperatures while keeping service disruptions to a minimum.

200 free meals are bringing Dayton neighbors together

A partnership between Fraternity Kitchen and The Entrepreneurs' Center Kitchen Incubator is helping fight food insecurity by giving away 200 free meals to local residents. Organizers say the event combines community service with support for emerging food entrepreneurs working through the incubator program. The meals are being prepared by local food businesses, creating an opportunity to both serve families and showcase growing Dayton entrepreneurs. Beyond the immediate assistance, the effort highlights how nonprofits, small businesses, and community organizations are collaborating to make a direct impact across the city. For many residents, it is a reminder that local partnerships can provide both practical help and a stronger sense of community.

Meet Hank
pond diver, rock collector, certified good boy.
A one and a half year old golden retriever with a heart bigger than he is, Hank joined Katie's Fairborn family of five back in December 2024 and immediately decided the whole house belonged to him now. He spends his days adventuring with his best friend Bart, who happens to be a cat, proving that golden retriever charm has no boundaries. Somewhere between chewing on things he shouldn't and melting hearts he definitely should, Hank became the kind of dog who makes a house feel a little more like home.
Hank has a few party tricks he is very proud of. He can sit like the world's goodest boy, but his rollover always gets stuck halfway, leaving him spinning in place like a confused little goose who forgot the rest of the plan. Give him half a chance and he will sneak off for a splash in the neighborhood pond or come trotting back with the biggest rock he could find, carried like a trophy he just cannot wait to show off. He also loves making new friends, human and canine alike, though he has one very serious rule: if a stranger hands him a treat, he will take it politely, then drop it right on the ground, because Hank simply does not take candy from strangers.
Got a pet who brightens your days?
We love celebrating the furry (and feathered, and scaled!) friends that make our Dayton community so special.
