🏥 UD Students Are Getting a Brand New Home for Health and Wellbeing
University of Dayton is opening a 34,200-square-foot Health and Wellbeing Center on Monday, Aug. 3, after 17 months of work. The space combines the student health center and counseling center under one roof, with more exam rooms, expanded group therapy space, and a new fitness studio. UD President Eric F. Spina said the center reflects the university's commitment to caring for the whole student. Nearly $5 million in funding came from four past UD board chairs and their spouses.
🎭 A Six-Year Restoration Finally Pays Off in Fort Recovery
The 1883 Morvilius Opera House in Fort Recovery held its grand reopening this Wednesday, July 29, after six years of restoration work. The free General Open House ran from 5 to 7 p.m. and gave visitors a look at eleven hand-painted murals, four ceiling cameos, and more than 35 original Sosman and Landis stage flats. Preservation specialist Wendy Wazut-Barrett called it the best original flat collection in the country. The opera house sits at 201 North Wayne Street in Fort Recovery.
✏️ Over $100K in Free School Supplies Went to Brand New Teachers
Crayons to Classrooms held its fourth first-year teacher shopping event on Tuesday, July 28, giving roughly 105 new teachers the chance to fill carts with free classroom supplies. The nonprofit partners with graduates from Cedarville University, Wright State University, and, new this year, University of Dayton. Each teacher walked away with anywhere from $600 to $2,000 worth of supplies, donated by community members and companies like Lysol. Marketing manager Malena Ball said the event is designed to ease the financial strain new teachers face before their first paycheck.
Downtown Dayton Is Turning the Whole Month Into One Big Art Show

Art in the City is expanding beyond its usual one-day format into arts programming that runs all month long through Aug. 31. It opens with a Kickoff Festival on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 1 to 7 p.m., spreading live music, sculpture, aerial arts, and hands-on workshops across five downtown districts. From there, the celebration continues with a juried art show, a month-long interactive light installation, and a multi-day museum exhibition featuring 154 visual artists.

The Dayton Arcade: Juried Art Show, LeMonde Light Lane, Artist Trading Card Exchange, Dayton Sewing Collaborative "Dreaming in Dayton," Instrument Petting Zoo, Patch Lab, and music from the DPAA String Quartet and Dayton Opera
Levitt Pavilion Dayton: Gelli printing, live painting demos, henna and face painting, aerial arts, roving performers, and Rock Fest from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. with Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, The Boxcar Suite, and Spoils
RiverScape MetroPark: Live music from 1 to 4 p.m. with The Primetime Blues Band, Edde Osborne, 93Seven Band, and Moonstone, plus aerial arts and a Paint-a-Park activity
The Oregon District: A car show, live sculpting, tattoo demos, artisan vendors, and live music from 1 to 11 p.m. with DJ sets from 5 to 10 p.m.
The Fire Blocks District: Live music from Acoustic Junior, KimL, UD Horizons Jazz Combo & Linda Snyder, and The Lavandulas along Third and St. Clair streets
K12 Gallery & TEJAS: A 1,000 square foot collaborative fiber mural project plus studio tours
Throughout Downtown: Sidewalk chalk murals outside the Dayton Convention Center (22 E. Fifth St.) and the Greater Dayton LGBT Center (136 N. St. Clair St.)
