Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Stillwater River, which joins the Great Miami just north of downtown Dayton, was the site of several early frontier conflicts between American settlers and Shawnee villages in the 1780s and 1790s - the river valley was contested territory for nearly two decades before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville opened the region to settlement.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • 8,000 neighbors filled RiverScape and raised $200,000 on Saturday, Oct. 10.

  • Tsukicon closes part of Fifth Street for anime, food trucks and Idol Fest.

  • Warrick Farm hayrides run weekends in Miamisburg through Sunday, Oct. 25.

Each ride lasts about a half hour and heads out to the animals in the field, where riders typically get to feed the cows from the wagon. Tickets are $9, and riders 2 years old and younger go free. One Morning by the River, $200,000 Worth of Hope

Saturday morning, Oct. 10, RiverScape MetroPark belonged to the roughly 8,000 people who turned out for the annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Among them were survivors, people living with breast cancer right now, and the families, friends and neighbors who came to walk beside them. By the end of the morning the crowd had raised an estimated $200,000, a total organizers said honors those who have died, supports those in treatment now and celebrates every survivor who made it to the starting line.

“We all know someone whose life has been touched by breast cancer,” said Megan Haggerty, senior manager of events for the American Cancer Society, who asked the community to help fund hope for people facing a diagnosis. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosis among women in America, and about one in eight will develop it in her lifetime, which is exactly what $200,000 from one Dayton morning is meant to change.
