Good morning, Dayton!

Hereโ€™s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Dayton area was once home to a thriving aeronautical industry beyond just the Wright Brothers - companies like Delco and General Motors' Dayton operations produced critical aircraft components and instruments throughout World War II, making the Miami Valley one of the most strategically important manufacturing regions in the country.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • Cat adoption fees just dropped across the city through July 19.

  • Kettering families now have a new walk-in option for sick kids.

  • Dayton is calling on volunteers to help clean up the Great Miami River.

FOODIE FRIDAY

Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of mustโ€‘try spots is here!

Blue Crab Juicy Seafood & Bar
If you have been craving a good seafood boil, this is your spot. Build your own bag with crab, shrimp, and lobster tossed in their signature garlic butter sauce, then round it out with a side of hush puppies. Whether you are celebrating something big or just want a fun, hands-on dinner, the combination boils are worth the mess.

Thai Table
The dining room here feels calm and welcoming, the kind of space where the food gets to do the talking. Their pad thai and drunken noodles bring bold, balanced heat, and the tom yum soup arrives steaming and fragrant. Dishes come out vibrant and carefully plated, with a freshness that comes from a genuinely family-run kitchen. It is quiet, unhurried, and built for savoring every bite.

๐Ÿ“5841 Far Hills Ave, Dayton๐Ÿ“

Canal Street Arcade and Deli
Part deli, part arcade, all charm. The sandwiches come stacked high, from a classic Reuben to build-your-own creations layered with fresh meats and cheeses on toasted bread. The room hums with the sound of pinball machines and old-school arcade games, giving the whole space a playful, nostalgic energy. It is a rare kind of spot where you can grab a great meal and a little bit of childhood all in one visit.

๐Ÿฑ Dayton's Shelter Cats Just Got a Whole Lot More Affordable

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton has slashed adoption fees through July 19 as part of its Empty the Shelters event. Kittens are now $70, adult cats $50, and senior cats just $20. The shelter says every adoption opens up space to help even more animals in need. Whether you want a playful kitten or a laid-back senior companion, there's a match waiting for you.

What if help showed up before someone had to ask for it?

Finding housing is only one piece of overcoming homelessness. Accessing healthcare, replacing identification, receiving mental health care, or starting addiction treatment can be just as difficult. That's why Dayton and Montgomery County have launched the Downtown Dayton Outreach Street Program, sending licensed, trained professionals into neighborhoods to connect people experiencing homelessness with the services they need. The effort comes as county data shows 571 people are living in emergency shelters or unsheltered, while 55% of households in the crisis response system report a disabling condition and 42% report struggling with mental health. Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss said the program allows police officers to focus on community policing and emergency calls while outreach specialists build trust and guide people toward housing, healthcare, and long-term support instead of criminalizing poverty. Backed by additional investments, including $20 million for a behavioral health unit at the county jail and $1.3 million for a coordinated care portal, local leaders and Miami Valley Housing Opportunities say the goal is simple: helping more Daytonians find stability and, ultimately, a place they can call home.
