Good morning, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's Five Oaks neighborhood, just north of downtown near the Stillwater River, was one of the city's most intentionally integrated neighborhoods in the 1970s and 1980s - residents formed one of the more organized neighborhood associations in the city specifically to manage racial transition in a way that prevented white flight, a story that urban sociologists have studied as a case study in intentional integration.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
If you have ever called a contractor and hit voicemail, you already know what happens next. You hang up and call someone else.
It turns out that is not just an occasional inconvenience - it is one of the most consistent ways local home service businesses lose revenue without ever knowing it. Studies show that small home service businesses miss up to 62% of their incoming calls. And 85% of those callers never try again.
That is the problem DYT Digital was built to solve. They build systems that answer calls, capture lead information, and notify the business owner automatically - so no opportunity slips through the cracks while a technician is out on a job.
In their first week working with a local Dayton contractor, their system handled 34 calls, triggered 109 automated actions, and maintained 100% positive caller sentiment across every single interaction.
They also help local businesses show up stronger on Google - so when a homeowner is searching for a contractor at 9pm, the right business is the one that comes up.
If you know someone running an HVAC, plumbing, roofing, or home service business in Dayton, this is worth sending their way.

DAYTON DIGEST
🧦 2,000 Pairs of Socks, Right Before the Cold
Daybreak has been chosen to receive 2,000 pairs of Bombas socks, and the timing lines up with the turn in the weather. Socks are the most requested item at homeless shelters, which is why Bombas built its whole model around them when it started in 2013. Daybreak CEO Courtney Patel pointed out that the young people they serve often walk several miles a day to school, work, the grocery store, or medical appointments. In her words, “That is a lot of walking if you don’t have warm, comfortable socks.”
🏠 Bring Your Measurements Downtown
The Dayton Home & Lifestyle Expo takes over the Dayton Convention Center at 22 E 5th St from Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8. Admission is free, though you reserve a ticket through Eventbrite first and show it at the door. Exhibitors cover kitchens and baths, roofing, HVAC, windows, flooring, and solar, with specials that only run during the show. Organizers suggest bringing photos and rough measurements of your project so you can leave with real quotes instead of guesses.
🏛 Ten Dayton Places on the Watch List
Preservation Dayton released its annual list of the ten most endangered properties in the city on Monday, November 2. The list includes the Dayton Daily News Building, the Reynolds Mansion, the Wright Factory Site, the Santa Clara Business District, and the Van Deman Apartments, among others. Mindi Wardell, the group’s secretary, framed each one as carrying a piece of Dayton’s story. Preservation Dayton is hoping the list pulls residents, developers, and public officials into conversations about reuse rather than demolition.

A Flyover Kicks Off Dayton's Veterans Day Celebration

A flyover opens the 5th Annual Dayton VA Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, on the Dayton VA campus. The medical center says everyone is invited, not just veterans and their families, and the whole morning is built around showing appreciation for their service and sacrifice. Dozens of entries will roll through the campus, with a resource fair and food trucks set up alongside.
The Fisher House on campus is opening for tours that day as it marks its 8th anniversary. The parade is in its fifth year, and with Veterans Day landing on Wednesday, November 11, this one is the easiest chance most of us will get to say thank you in person.
