🎵 Dayton's Classical Radio Station Just Moved Into Its Dream Studio
Discover Classical (WDPR 88.1 FM) celebrated its new home at 130 W. Second St. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday after more than 30 years inside the Metropolitan Arts Center. The $2 million space, which the station began broadcasting from on July 1, features three air studios and a performance studio equipped with a concert Steinway piano. President and CEO Shaun Yu called it a gathering place for arts creators across the region, while longtime morning host Larry Coressel, who has been with the station for nearly 40 years, said the performance space will be a major draw for musicians and the community alike.
🍲 Dayton's First Food Entrepreneur Summit Brought the Whole Table Together
The inaugural From Scratch Food Summit brought local food entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and more than 130 attendees to the Dayton Arcade on Monday for an afternoon of panel discussions, tastings, and connections. Hosted by the OH Taste Foundation and its 6888 Kitchen Incubator, the event featured dozens of local businesses sampling and selling their products. Executive Director Dabriah Rice said the mission is simple: give Dayton's food entrepreneurs the stage, the connections, and the resources they need to grow. Proceeds from the summit will go toward providing under-resourced entrepreneurs with professional commercial kitchen access, business training, and mentorship.
🎓 UD Receives Its Largest Donation Ever: $15 Million for a New Business School
An anonymous donor has given the University of Dayton a $15 million gift, the largest single donation in the university's history, to help build a new home for its School of Business Administration. The planned four-story, 153,000-square-foot facility will be located next to Kettering Labs and will house expanded programs including the Davis Center for Portfolio Management, Flyer Enterprises, a student-run coffee shop, and event space. UD President Eric Spina said groundbreaking could happen as early as spring 2027 if fundraising stays on track, with the full project estimated at $50 million to $100 million. The university has now entered its public fundraising phase with about $5 million left to raise before construction can begin.
A Kettering Health Nurse Built a Garden That Feeds 50 Refugee Families for Free
Behind Kettering Health Dayton at 108 Neal Avenue, a community garden is quietly changing lives one row of produce at a time. The Unity Garden, founded by Kettering Health nurse Bruce Kidney in partnership with the Grandview Foundation, grows organic fruits and vegetables entirely free of charge for approximately 50 refugee families in one of the largest food deserts in the country. What started on just two empty lots has expanded to eight city lots along Neal Avenue and Geyer Street, where families grow culturally significant crops like African eggplants, beans, and squash from seeds they brought from their home countries. The Grandview Foundation contributed $50,000 last year and another $15,000 this year, and Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge recently toured the garden to highlight community-led solutions to food insecurity. Kidney says a free food pantry on Neal Avenue is next, with plans to open as early as October, stocking dry goods alongside the season's harvest.
