🎓 A Volleyball Serving Contest Just Earned Two Wright State Students Free Tuition
Friday night at Wright State University turned into a life-changing moment for two students. As part of the school's Weeks of Welcome activities, students who attended Fall Fest on Friday afternoon and checked into the evening volleyball match were eligible for a tuition giveaway. Four finalists competed in a serving contest, and when Jonathan Castiglioni and Keri Heckman tied, President Sue Edwards made the call to award both of them a full year of free tuition. The two runners-up, Lilly Willmann and Tiana Spivey, went home with $250 eCampus book vouchers and Wright State fan packs.
🏙️ Dayton Is Getting $100,000 to Clean Up Illegal Dump Sites Across the City
The City of Dayton will receive $100,000 in new grant funding to clean up illegal dump sites, part of a statewide initiative from Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson that awarded over $1 million across Ohio. This is the second round of cleanup grants from the state, with the first awarded in April 2025. Wilson noted that illegal dumping creates neighborhood eyesores, threatens the environment, and shifts an unfair financial burden onto taxpayers who are left covering the cleanup costs.
⛳ The Gem City Jam Raised Over $287,000 for Kids at Dayton Children's
The 19th annual Gem City Jam brought hundreds of golfers together this month to raise over $287,000 for pediatric development therapy services at Dayton Children's Hospital. The event was hosted and organized by the Terrific Women in Giving (TWIG) Auxiliary, with support from presenting sponsors Morris Furniture Company, Hirtle & Co., and Economy Linen and Towel Service.
Eastwood MetroPark's New Nature Play Area Is Now Open for Dayton Families
Five Rivers MetroParks has officially opened a brand new nature play area at Eastwood MetroPark, replacing the park's traditional playground that had been in place since 1998. Located next to the Eastwood Lagoon, the new space features a climbing and bouldering area with a rock scramble, a stone grotto, an embankment slide, a play hut, a fort-building zone, a sandpit, and a water play section all designed to get kids outdoors and connected with nature. An accessible walkway connects every play area to the parking lot, restrooms, bike path, and shelter, with key features like the play hut, sandpit, and pump fountain built to be accessible for everyone. More than 60% of the project was funded through community generosity, with major support from Cindi and Mat Heck, the Houston Community Fund, David Strohscher, and the Five Rivers MetroParks Foundation. The park is open now for families ready to trade screens for sandpits, splash zones, and rock scrambles in one of Dayton's most popular green spaces.
