Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Hopewell Culture, a sophisticated Indigenous civilization, built ceremonial earthwork mounds throughout the Miami Valley between roughly 100 BCE and 500 CE - and several of those mounds still exist today within the Miamisburg Mound State Memorial in Miamisburg.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • A Wright State grad served as crew surgeon for the first deep space crewed mission in over 50 years.

  • The Dayton Metro Library is rolling out movie nights, storytimes, and book tastings all month long.

πŸš€ From Dayton's Classrooms to NASA's Deep Space Mission
Richard Scheuring, a graduate of Wright State University's Boonshoft School of Medicine, is serving as the Prime Crew Surgeon for NASA's Artemis II mission, a 10-day journey that sent astronauts beyond Earth's orbit for the first time in decades. In his role, Scheuring oversees medical preparations and monitors astronaut health before, during, and after the flight. He earned his master's degree in aerospace medicine from Wright State in 2004, and has credited his training in Dayton with giving him the clinical foundation to work across specialized medical settings. The crew is set to return to Earth Friday evening.

✈️ A Final Salute From the Pilots Who Ferried America's Warplanes
The Air Force Museum Foundation received a gift of nearly $11,000 on Friday from the Air Transport Command Association (ATCA) as the organization closed its doors for good. During World War II, the Air Transport Command ferried aircraft to locations around the world and transported personnel and supplies for the War Department until 1948. The ATCA formed in 1998 when several ferry group organizations merged, and hosted military reunions through 2016. As the veterans who served have passed on, ATCA member John Kinyon wrote that their children want the story told to a wider audience, and the association's remaining assets have been directed to an ATC Fund at the Foundation to help do just that.

Free Health Screenings, Clothing, and Community Care Come Together at Dayton's Spring Love Event

The sixth annual Spring Love Event brought a full day of free health services and community resources to Dayton on Saturday, organized by the B Love Foundation and Jubilee Community Church. The health and wellness fair offered blood pressure checks, A1C screenings, diabetes care, eye exams, mental health resources, and workforce development training, all at no cost. Founder Tremayne Anderson said the event was built around the idea that residents deserve access to essential services every single day, not just at special events. This year's fair brought together 14 healthcare providers, including Premier Health and CareSource, and organizers entered participants into a follow-up database so healthy habits continue long after the event. The B Love Community Closet also provided free clothing, and free food was served throughout the day.

Oliver is an eight-year-old Russian Blue mix from Miamisburg, and his story might just make your whole week. After Cindy and her family said goodbye to their beloved cat of nearly eighteen years, they knew they wanted to give that same love to a senior pet who needed it. Then they met Oliver. The shelter placed him in their arms, and he went completely still β€” soft, calm, and quiet β€” like he took one slow look at them and thought, "oh, there you are." He has been their lap cat ever since, and something tells us he is never letting go.

He is a gentle, snuggly soul who takes cuddle time very seriously. But Cindy knows the secret weapon: one flash of the laser light and this sweet boy turns into the most enthusiastic little athlete you have ever seen. Oliver is a reminder that senior pets have so much love saved up, so much warmth ready to give, just waiting for the right person to come along and receive it. He was eight years old. He had been waiting for his person. And just like that, he found her. Cindy, you gave him exactly that. πŸ’š
