🚁 A Dayton Drone Company Heads to a Big Tech Stage
Dayton's Dexa will compete in the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield 200, set for Oct. 13-15 in San Francisco, with the Disrupt Cup and $100,000 in equity-free prize money on the line. Founder and CEO Beth Flippo called the selection, chosen from thousands of companies worldwide, a major milestone for the team. Dexa earned FAA Part 135 air carrier certification last year, which allows paid delivery flights beyond the operator's line of sight. Its DE-2020 drone was built right in downtown Dayton.
🏥 Dayton Children's Earns the National Spotlight Again
Dayton Children's Hospital was named a 2026-2027 Best Children's Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, with national rankings in orthopedics and neonatology. This is the seventh straight year of recognition for the orthopedics program and the second straight year for neonatology. Dr. Michael Albert said every child deserves excellent orthopedic care close to home, and neonatology director Dr. Olutoye Osunbunmi pointed to the team's care for babies and support for families during NICU stays. The rankings help families and doctors find hospitals that care for kids with serious or complex needs.
🏢 Day Air Is Moving Into a Familiar Austin Landing Building
Day Air Credit Union says it has purchased the former Teradata headquarters at Austin Landing in Miami Twp. to become its new home base, with the move expected next summer. The two-story building was built in 2010 and has more than 61,000 square feet. Day Air's current Kettering headquarters at 3501 Wilmington Pike will stay open as a branch. With more than 54,000 members, president John Theobald said the new space will help the credit union keep growing across the Miami Valley.
From a 110 Average to a Scholarship: James North’s Remarkable Bowling Journey
When James North first started bowling lessons four years ago, he was averaging about 110 and, in his own words, knew very little about the game. Today, the Centerville High School graduate and Wright State University freshman is the recipient of the Kurt Gostel Senior Scholarship from the Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress, which is awarded each year to a graduating senior who excels in the classroom, in the community, and on the lanes. His senior season included first team All-GWOC honors, a 227.6 average in conference play, and all-events scratch and handicap titles, plus a team scratch title, at the Ohio USBC Buckeye State Youth Championship. Off the lanes, the 18-year-old earned a 4.56 GPA, graduated summa cum laude with more than 30 college credits, was accepted into Wright State's Honors Program as a finance major, and has volunteered with groups like Shoes 4 the Shoeless. His coach, Andy Parker, who was once coached by Kurt Gostel himself, said North's growth from a true beginner is among the most remarkable he has seen, and North now plans to earn his own USBC coaching certification.

CITY HALL
Law enforcement officers from across Ohio gathered at the Dayton Convention Center for the Law Enforcement Training Symposium, where they put on virtual reality headsets to face realistic calls like family disturbances, traffic stops, and officer wellness scenarios. After each simulation, instructors walked officers through what went well and what could improve, giving them real practice in a setting where mistakes carry no real-world consequences. Other sessions covered missing person cases, crisis communication, crime scene management, and counter-drone training.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
Olivia Baca converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to lift Dayton women's soccer past Ball State, 1-0, on Sunday night at Baujan Field. Laney Smith drew the penalty after being taken down in the box, and the goal was Baca's team-leading third of the season. Goalkeeper Kasey Cannistraro earned her first shutout as a Flyer, stopping Ball State's only shot on goal. Dayton controlled 61% of possession and outshot the Cardinals 14-8 to move to 3-5-0.
Next game: Dayton will face St. Bonaventure in its Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.
Dayton volleyball dropped the first two sets to Florida Atlantic on Sunday in Tampa, Fla., then came all the way back to win 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-10. Kaleigh Meritt led the Flyers with 16 kills, her first double-digit match for Dayton, while Kamryn Hunt added 13 kills and two aces. Rylee Sloss (29 assists) and Natalie Harrington (27 assists) kept the offense moving in a match with 34 ties and 11 lead changes. The comeback lifts the Flyers to 6-4.
Next game: Dayton will face Missouri on Friday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m., the first of three matches against Missouri, Bowling Green, and Toledo to close out nonconference play..
