Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Miami Valley's glacial geology means that subsurface conditions vary dramatically within short distances - sand and gravel lenses, clay deposits, and limestone outcrops can shift within a few hundred feet, which is why foundation engineers working in the Dayton area routinely encounter surprises that would be less common in regions with more uniform geology.

Inside Today’s Edition…

  • Downtown Dayton is hosting 500 nuclear scientists and engineers from NASA, the Department of Energy, and beyond this week

  • For the 29th year running, Centerville is honoring a fallen officer with a blood drive that has now collected over 5,000 units

  • A one-of-a-kind Ohio program at Miami Valley Career Technology Center is putting high schoolers in mock trials and on track for legal careers

The hottest day of the year is the worst time to find out your AC isn't ready for it.

Most breakdowns don't happen randomly. A worn capacitor, low refrigerant, a dirty coil - small problems that went undetected through winter and finally gave out under the pressure of a July heat wave. A failed compressor costs $1,500 to $2,500 to replace. An emergency call runs double the normal rate.

A $99 spring tune-up from Advantage Plumbing Heating & Air catches those problems now, before they become a midsummer emergency.

When Elliot's AC broke right after he bought his house, Advantage came out, found the issue, fixed it, and didn't charge him for the visit. That's who these people are.

4.8 stars. 918 Dayton reviews. They show up, they're honest, and they fix it right the first time.

Book your $99 AC tune-up before April 30th.

DAYTON DIGEST

A Centerville Blood Drive Just Turned 29. The Story Behind It Will Stay With You.

For 29 consecutive years, the Centerville Police Department has held the John P. Kalaman Blood Drive in memory of Officer John P. Kalaman, who died in the line of duty on I-675 in 1998 while responding to an accident alongside Washington Township firefighter Robert O'Toole. This year hit differently: it's the first drive since John's parents, who built this tradition from grief and kept it going for nearly three decades, recently passed away. The event runs in partnership with Versiti Blood Center, whose vice president Tracy Morgan shared that the drive has now collected over 5,000 units of blood in John's name. Retired military veteran Mike Miller, who has been donating blood for nearly 60 years, put it plainly: giving blood is probably the simplest thing you can do for your fellow person. To find a donation location near you, visit versiti.org.

Your Weekly Dose of Home Advice
Spring fertilizing has a timing sweet spot - too early and you're feeding weeds before your grass is ready, too late and you've missed the growth window. In the Dayton area, late April is generally the right time for a first application once soil temperatures are consistently above 55 degrees. Pull weeds before they go to seed, trim back any dead growth from winter, and check your irrigation or hose connections before you need them regularly.

Heads Up, Dayton: Two Local Roads Closing Wednesday
