🏨 A Big New Neighbor Is Coming to the Convention Center
A new Marriott branded hotel is headed to South Jefferson Street, right next to the Dayton Convention Center and the Oregon District parking garage. The project represents a $77 million investment and will feature 197 guest rooms, flexible event space, a restaurant and a fitness center, with an opening targeted for late 2028. Officials say the project will bring 90 permanent new jobs to the city and generate an estimated $1.2 million in new sales tax annually.
🌫️ An Air Quality Alert Worth Knowing About Through Tuesday
An air quality alert is covering the Miami Valley through Monday night, lifting as Tuesday begins, and it's worth planning around if you or someone in your household is sensitive to air quality. The alert, issued by the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency, covers Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby counties. The air quality index is forecast to hit 101 on Sunday and climb to 105 on Monday, both in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range, so it's a good evening to save the yard work for later and take it easy on outdoor errands tomorrow.
🎗️ A Ballroom Full of Hope for Dayton Families
The Dayton Masonic Temple's ballroom filled up Friday night for the Gala of Hope Living in Color, an event bringing dozens of local businesses together to support cancer care across the Miami Valley. The gala featured a live auction with artwork and collectibles, and organizers are aiming high this year. The event raised $2 million in 2024, and this year organizers hope to reach $3 million. Gala Hope Foundation executive director Morgan Ednie put it simply: cancer touches a family's whole life, not just one part of it, and the community's response needs to meet families there too.
Back-to-School Help That Goes Beyond the Backpack

For some military children, a new school year can mean more than a new classroom. Frequent moves between duty stations can mean adjusting to a new school, new neighborhood, and new routine, and Operation Homefront is helping make that transition a little easier for families in Dayton. The national nonprofit recently hosted a back-to-school event that supported approximately 150 military families with meal kits, backpacks filled with school supplies, toys, and games. Children also enjoyed balloon animals and face painting, while the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals mascots joined the event and helped create opportunities for families to connect with others who understand the unique challenges of military life. Operation Homefront says its work goes beyond school supplies, offering financial assistance programs, helping find permanent homes for veterans, and hosting family events throughout the year. Across the country, the organization has helped house more than 730 homes for veterans and filled more than 630,000 backpacks with school supplies for military children, with its Dayton event focused on helping families feel prepared for the first day and connected to a community that understands.

Meet Opie
This sweet 5-year-old Australian Shepherd and Border Collie mix was rescued by Adopt A Pit Rescue after needing massive surgery. While Opie was recovering with a foster, Sam took a chance and submitted an application, even after months of looking for the right dog. Less than 12 hours later, Sam was approved.
A week later, Opie ran through Sam's front door, straight to her side. And, well, she hasn't really left since.
Opie didn't just find a home. She found her person.
Now, Opie is Sam's best friend, social butterfly and unofficial introduction service. She loves meeting new people and going out on the town, and Sam has even met people who only know her because of Opie.
She does have one very serious rule: new floors must be approached with caution. If Opie encounters a floor that isn't carpet, she may freeze completely until Sam decides she's spent enough time investigating the “weird” surface. Sometimes, that means a little carry is required.
And when Opie isn't making new friends? She's probably enjoying her two favorite things: treats and patio season. 🌞
