TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's Victoria Theatre, opened in 1866, is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in Ohio - it survived the 1913 flood, two world wars, and the urban decline of the 1970s, and still hosts live performances today on the same South Ludlow Street block where it originally stood.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • 7,000 meals last year, and the Feast of Giving returns November 26.

  • Nine days of food trucks have Kettering’s research park rethinking its plan.

  • A 33-year-old art center is raising scholarship money on November 7.

FOODIE FRIDAY

Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of must‑try spots is here!

Tom & Dot's Gelato
A little gelato counter in downtown Miamisburg with over 36 flavors made from Italian recipes, plus sorbetto, sandwiches, coffee and fresh cannoli. Regulars swear by the tiramisu and the seasonal pumpkin, and there are dairy free and gluten free options if you need them. Grab a cup and walk it down toward the river, which is honestly the whole point.

📍36A S Main St, Miamisburg📍

Izakaya
An anime themed restaurant and bar with a neon lit dining room and its own outdoor entrance at Fairfield Commons, so you never have to walk through the mall. Go for The Izakaya, their signature Korean corn dog with half beef sausage, half mozzarella, crispy onions and a gochujang drizzle, and split the baked Rangoon Dip while you decide on the rest.

📍2727 Fairfield Commons, Beavercreek📍

Yaffa Grill
Mediterranean cooking in the heart of Miamisburg, where the spices, marinades and dips are all made in house. Come for the chicken shawarma or lamb kebab, marinated and fire grilled, then round it out with homemade hummus and fresh pita. Regulars single out the garlic sauce, the portions are generous for the price, and the dining room is clean and easy to settle into.

📍21 Alexandersville Rd, Miamisburg📍

🏗️ The Office Park That Wants a Food Hall
Employees surveyed at the Miami Valley Research Park said the 1,200-plus-acre campus between Kettering and Beavercreek is a nice place to work, though one put the gap plainly: “but there’s nothing really to do.” So the Research Park Association tried BaseCamp, a free nine-day pop-up with food trucks and a beer garden in the parking lot at Research Boulevard and Founders Drive, and turnout grew every day. The newly adopted master plan now proposes a semi-permanent version, estimated at about $491,000 to install and about $12,000 a month to program, with the City of Kettering, Industrial Commercial Properties, and the Dayton Food Truck Association as partners. On the amenity wish list: a coffee shop, rooftop dining, a food hall, patio space, and volleyball courts.

🔐 Wright State Builds a Path to Cybersecurity Career
Wright State University has been awarded nearly $200,000 through a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, to grow its cybersecurity program. “Cybersecurity protects more than computers and information,” said program director Junjie Zhang, who points to advanced manufacturing, where students work on real challenges in the systems “that turn designs into physical products.” Wright State will lead the initiative and shape the training around what local employers are hiring for, so what students learn matches what those companies need. The work is aimed at the shortage of cybersecurity professionals, which means Dayton students solving real industry problems before they graduate.

🎨 Inside the Handprinted Building on South Jefferson
For 33 years, K12&TEJAS has run art classes for kids and adults out of the handprinted building at 341 S. Jefferson Street, with a mission to help people of all ages imagine, learn, and create. The nonprofit reaches well past its own studio: in school and after school art making, summer camps, field trips, murals and public art, workshops, professional exhibitions, and a creative reuse shop called Scrappy Cat that resells donated fabric, yarn, and thread. Its Artist in Training Program gives young artists after school classes, a safe place to develop their own style, and help building a portfolio, with scholarships covering the cost for families who need it. Those scholarships are what the Art Off fundraiser on Saturday, November 7 pays for, with happy hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m., a live painting competition and auction, hot glass blowing, jewelry making, and live music; tickets are $75 general and $30 for students.

Feast of Giving Brings Dayton Together for Thanksgiving

Volunteers prepared 7,000 meals at last year’s Feast of Giving with help from community partners including Miami Valley Meals, and preparations for this Thanksgiving are already underway. Event director Steve Paris said the free gathering at the Dayton Convention Center is open to the whole community, including military and veteran families, seniors, and working families. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie are on the menu, with live music and kids’ activities alongside the meal.

The feast runs Thursday, November 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Blue Star Families of Ohio will have a table where military families can learn about local resources and programs. Program director Geri Maples, who is the wife and caregiver of an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, pointed to a survey finding that about one in four military and veteran families in Ohio face food insecurity, which is part of why Paris said, “This is much more than a free meal.”
