Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Miami Valley has some of the deepest limestone cave systems in Ohio underneath it, a result of glacial meltwater carving through the region's karst geology over thousands of years - which is also why Dayton's water table is exceptionally high and some older neighborhoods experience basement flooding even in dry years.

Inside Today’s Edition…

  • Dayton 6th graders partnered with Five Rivers MetroParks to help restore wetlands at Cox Arboretum.

  • Wright State's Boonshoft School of Medicine landed Ohio's first-ever street medicine grant worth $2.5M.

  • Free veteran resource and job fair tomorrow at Wright State University Student Union, 3PM to 7PM.

The hottest day of the year is the worst time to find out your AC isn't ready for it.

Most breakdowns don't happen randomly. A worn capacitor, low refrigerant, a dirty coil - small problems that went undetected through winter and finally gave out under the pressure of a July heat wave. A failed compressor costs $1,500 to $2,500 to replace. An emergency call runs double the normal rate.

A $99 spring tune-up from Advantage Plumbing Heating & Air catches those problems now, before they become a midsummer emergency.

When Elliot's AC broke right after he bought his house, Advantage came out, found the issue, fixed it, and didn't charge him for the visit. That's who these people are.

4.8 stars. 918 Dayton reviews. They show up, they're honest, and they fix it right the first time.

Book your $99 AC tune-up before April 30th.

🩺 Wright State Just Landed Ohio's First Street Medicine Grant
Wright State University's Boonshoft School of Medicine and Premier Health received a $2.5 million federal grant, the first of its kind awarded in Ohio, to expand Dayton Street Medicine. The five-year grant will allow the program to serve more patients experiencing homelessness and train more medical students and residents. In its first year, Dayton Street Medicine served over 300 people through the Premier Health Mobile Clinic at the Dream Center on East Third Street. This summer the program adds two new service days, including a new rural partnership with the Bethany Center in Piqua and street outreach rounds in high-needs areas of Dayton.

🐾 35 Years, 925 Runners, and $80,000 for Animals Who Need It
The Humane Society of Greater Dayton held its 35th Annual Furry Skurry 5K at St. Leonard in Centerville, drawing 925 participants who raised nearly $80,000 for animals in need across the Miami Valley. The event featured runners, walkers, vendors, food trucks, dozens of pets, and a memorial garden honoring animals who have passed. Organizers cut the event short due to lightning and rain, but HSGD President and CEO Brian Weltge said the community turnout was still overwhelming and inspiring. Funds raised go toward lifesaving medical care, shelter, and programs that help thousands of animals each year.

Dayton 6th Graders Are Helping Save the Wetlands at Cox Arboretum

Photo Credits: Nick Hrkman / WYSO

The sixth grade class at the Dayton Regional STEM School partnered with Five Rivers MetroParks, the Beavercreek Wetlands Association, and other conservation groups to develop restoration plans for wetland habitats at Cox Arboretum MetroPark. Students visited the arboretum, heard from scientists and New York Times bestselling author Doug Tallamy, and presented their research and improvement proposals to MetroParks staff on May 6. Grace Dietsch, Director of Conservation for Five Rivers MetroParks, noted that Ohio has lost over 90% of its wetlands and said she wanted kids at the center of the effort to reconnect people with this increasingly rare habitat. Teachers Sarah Paul and Emily Carter, whose grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and the Fund for Teachers sparked the project four years ago, said students are now taking native plant seeds home to grow in their own yards.

Your Weekly Dose of Home Advice
Now that windows are opening regularly, check every screen for tears or bent frames that let insects in. Clean window tracks with a vacuum and a damp cloth - grime buildup prevents windows from sealing properly and affects energy efficiency. Check weatherstripping around frames for cracking or compression, and if you have double-pane windows, look for fogging between the panes which signals a failed seal that's reducing your insulation value.
