🏥 Kettering Health Just Made the National Cut
Kettering Health is getting some national love. Five of its hospitals, including Kettering Health Dayton, Kettering Health Main Campus, Kettering Health Miamisburg and Soin Medical Center, earned "High Performing" designations in U.S. News & World Report's 2026-2027 Best Hospitals rankings for cardiovascular, cancer and orthopedic care. Kettering Health Main Campus held onto its title as the No. 1 hospital in the Dayton Metro area for the second year in a row. The recognition lands right as Kettering Health Dayton celebrates 100 years of serving our community.
💙 A $1 Million Gift for Dayton Kids
Dayton Children's Hospital announced a $1 million donation from local family Dick and Patty Glennon, the largest single gift in CARE House history. CARE House connects children and families with medical care, therapy and other support, and served more than 1,100 children in 2025 alone, nearly double the number it saw in 2016. The gift will help fund a $5.3 million expansion, adding more exam and therapy spaces, a soundproof interview room and an outdoor healing area. "We believe every child deserves safety, support and justice," the Glennons said.
🏡 A New Home Base for Healing Opens in Dayton
The Fudge Foundation cut the ribbon this week on its first permanent home, a newly renovated building that had sat empty for more than 70 years. Founder Dion Greene started the nonprofit in memory of his father, Derrick Fudge, one of the nine people lost in the 2019 Oregon District shooting. The new hub will host support groups, counseling and trauma resources, plus a free community meal every Thursday to help with food insecurity. "This is a place of hope," Greene said.
Backpacks, Haircuts and a Head Start: DPS Gets Families Ready for School

Dayton Public Schools filled Welcome Stadium with food, haircuts, and school supplies this weekend, kicking off the school year with its second annual Family First Fest. Families walked away with more than 600 backpacks stuffed with supplies, free haircuts from barbers and stylists, vaccine and physical checkups, on-the-spot enrollment help, and info tables staffed by all 27 DPS schools, with principals on hand personally welcoming new students. Superintendent David Lawrence said the event was built around one idea, "we're all family here in Dayton Public Schools," extending that to schools, partners, graduates and alumni across the district. DPS mom Lekesha Smith-Petty, there with her daughter Autumn, a third grader, said the tradition gives her family "a jump" on the year and a chance to see friends, teachers and principals, adding that it means the most for families new to the district: "You get to meet your people in your building." Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 11 for grades 1 through 9 and Wednesday, Aug. 12 for grades 10 through 12, with kindergarten and preschool starting the following week, giving Dayton families one more reason to feel ready for what's ahead.
