🔬 A Dayton Teacher Just Landed $5,000 to Fuel Student Scientists
Harry Dittrich, a ten-year educator at Pathway School of Discovery in Dayton, has been named one of just 13 Lead Advocates in the Society for Science's 2026/2027 Advocate Program. The national program selected 100 teachers across the country this year, awarding a total of $326,000 in stipends. Dittrich, who previously served as an Advocate and saw firsthand how the program propelled his students forward, will receive a $5,000 stipend to mentor students through original scientific research and science competitions. He joins a network of more than 430 educators who have supported over 9,100 students nationwide through the program.
💼 Ohio Will Pay Employers $10,000 to Train the Next Generation of Technicians
JobsOhio just announced a new incentive offering qualified Ohio employers up to $10,000 for each employee or new hire who earns a degree or completes an apprenticeship while working at their company. Employers must be in one of JobsOhio's ten targeted industries and pay participating workers at least $20 per hour. The need is real: for every technician hired by an Ohio manufacturer, five other technician positions go unfilled, according to JobsOhio data shared at a Sinclair Community College event on August 31. In the Dayton region, the Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) will help employers navigate the process, and applications are open now at jobsohio.com/path.
⚾ The Dragons' Last Regular Season Homestand Is Here
The Dayton Dragons are closing out the 2026 regular season at home this week, and there are a few ways to be part of it. On September 5, the Kona Big Wave Dragons Lair package runs $55 and includes a two-hour buffet, a Dragons shirt, and a Dragons hat. The South Dayton Toyota Diamond Club is available September 5 and 6 at $48 per ticket with a two-hour buffet and a hat. FLOC Needs 'Holiday Elves' to Bring Christmas to 4,000 Dayton Kids
FLOC (For Love of Children, Dayton) is calling on volunteers for its Christmas for Kids Program, and the goal this year is to put a smile on 4,000 children's faces. Volunteers, lovingly called "Holiday Elves," will pack toys at the FLOC Toy Cottage on the Second Floor of Talbott Tower from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with shifts available for a full day or half day and a minimum commitment of three hours. Volunteer dates begin as early as September 8 and run through late November, with multiple sessions available each week across all three months. Whether you can give one morning or show up every week, every set of hands helps fill a box that ends up under a child's tree.

CITY HALL
The HALO Act (Helping Heroes Activity on Location), introduced by local representatives Rep. Phil Plummer (R-Butler Twp.) and Rep. Thomas Hall (R-Madison Twp.), will take effect in early October, establishing a 15-foot buffer zone around police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics while they are actively working an emergency scene. The buffer only applies after a first responder gives a clear verbal warning, and it does not prohibit peaceful observation, recording, or constitutionally protected speech. Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck voiced strong support, noting a growing pattern of interference at emergency scenes, and the law also strengthens obstruction penalties to a first-degree misdemeanor, rising to a fourth-degree felony if the obstruction creates a risk of physical harm to a responder.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
The Dayton Flyers women's volleyball team took down Santa Clara 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21) and Eastern Illinois 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) to sweep the Flyer Invitational and open the 2026 season at 3-0. Freshmen Sidney Sprada and Charlotte Vinson were both named to the All-Tournament Team after combining for 78 kills across the weekend. Kamryn Hunt led the attack against Santa Clara with 18 kills, while the Flyers racked up 18 service aces on the day, including 12 against the Panthers. Rylee Sloss fired off three consecutive aces in the Eastern Illinois match to help seal the sweep.
Next game: Dayton heads to the Raider Challenge at Wright State, starting with Ball State on Thursday, September 4.
The Wright State Raiders men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Dayton. Lindenwood's Luca Bartoni struck first in the 41st minute, but Edoardo De Filippis answered in the 54th minute with his first goal of the season off an assist from Rowen Arnold to level the match. Wright State controlled the second half, outshooting Lindenwood 11-9 overall and 4-3 on target, while goalkeeper Alex Normandeau played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves. The Raiders move to 1-2-1 on the young season.
Next game: Wright State will travel to Louisville on Thursday, September 3 at 6 PM.
