🛒 Dinner Plans Built Around What's on Sale
Bill McCormick of Beavercreek, an Air Force veteran and father of three, launched Dishcount.co this spring to help families spend less at the grocery store. You enter your ZIP code, set your budget and dietary needs, and the site builds meals from local deals pulled from 27 chains every Wednesday. It's free to use, and McCormick says he doesn't make money from it. Planning meals around deals saves his own household roughly $20 to $30 a week, and he sends a weekly email with deal-based dinner ideas.
🍂 Costumes, Cider & Giant Trolls at Aullwood
Aullwood Audubon has its October lineup ready, and Thomas Dambo's giant recycled-material trolls, Bo, Bodil, and Bibbi, are staying on the grounds all month. A free Fall Migration Beginner Birding Walk heads to Siebenthaler Fen in Beavercreek on Friday, October 9, and "Why Wetlands Matter" pairs a lecture and hike on Thursday, October 8. Guests are encouraged to wear costumes for the "Trick or Tweet" treat hike on Saturday, October 24, and the month closes with Halloween Cider and Paint on Saturday, October 31. Aullwood is open Wednesday through Sunday, and most visits need admission or a membership, with separate registration or fees for some activities.
🔬 Shovels Are In for Kettering's New Light Lab
Dayton Regional STEM Schools held a groundbreaking Friday, September 25 for the Larry R. & Elaine A. Dosser Center for Manufacturing Sciences, an 11,000-square-foot addition to its campus in Kettering. The center will hold labs for lasers, photonics (the study and control of light), chemistry, and materials science. It was made possible by a gift from Larry Dosser, founder of Mound Laser and Photonics, and his late wife, Elaine, and the couple also helped start the school's original 900-square-foot lab in 2019. Beavercreek's Synergy Building Systems is building the addition.
Every Step at Wright State Counted for Parkinson's
On Saturday, September 26, people living with Parkinson's disease walked alongside their families, care partners, and friends at Wright State University for Moving Day Dayton. The Parkinson's Foundation hosted the free, annual walk from 9 a.m. to noon, one of the Moving Day events it holds in communities across the country. Movement was the point of the morning, since the foundation says staying active is proven to help manage Parkinson's symptoms.
Money raised supports the foundation's work to improve care and advance research toward a cure, along with resources for more than 364,000 people living with Parkinson's and related movement disorders. The walk also set out to raise awareness, giving Miami Valley families a place to speak up about Parkinson's and build a circle of support around the neighbors living with it.
