Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's human geography has been shaped by rivers in ways that are still visible in the street grid - the original town plat followed the contours of the Great Miami and Stillwater Rivers, and several of Dayton's neighborhood boundaries still trace lines that were established by which side of a creek or river people lived on 150 years ago.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • A Dayton track club came home from Iowa with 22 national medals.

  • Rain could not stop 180 families from getting free backpacks.

  • Daybreak breaks ground next week on a $1 million project.

🏠 The Miami Valley's Only Youth Shelter Is Finally Building

Daybreak, the nonprofit serving at-risk youth ages 10 to 24, was picked from more than 5,000 applicants nationwide as one of only 100 organizations to receive a $270,000 grant from the Lowe's Community Impact Program. That grant is the cornerstone of a $1 million renovation of its Dayton campus, and phase one creates a brand new emergency shelter space designed specifically for kids ages 10 to 17. "Our dream was going to cost us a million dollars," said Chief Development Officer Tina Rezash Rogal. Construction begins next week with phase one expected to finish within a year, the current youth wing will eventually be transformed into a dedicated area for young parents and their children, and Daybreak is still seeking $500,000 more from community members and local foundations to complete the project.

💊 Kroger Just Turned Two Errands Into One

Cincinnati-based Kroger announced Thursday that customers can have eligible prescriptions delivered in the same order as their groceries, through a new service powered by Instacart and available in the Kroger app and online. To use it, you have to be enrolled in Kroger's My Prescriptions and Online Pay programs. Michelle Izor, the Cincinnati/Dayton Division's Health and Wellness Leader, said folding pharmacy into everyday shopping "makes it possible for more families to manage their health in a convenient and efficient way," and the prescriptions are filled by the same Kroger pharmacy teams customers already know. Worth reading the fine print: eligibility varies by type of medication, delivery address and local regulations, and age and other exclusions may apply.

🎒 180 Backpacks and a Fire Truck to Climb Through

Organizers worried the wet weather would keep people home, but families lined up under the tents anyway, and 180 people and families left with backpacks filled with crayons, glue bottles, notebooks, markers and scissors. The B Love Foundation made it a full afternoon: sponsor Papa Johns provided pizza, volunteers served free hot dogs and hamburgers fresh off the grill, free health care resources were on site, and the Dayton fire department drew a crowd of kids peeking inside a fire truck and chatting with firefighters. Tremayne Anderson said the whole operation runs on one idea: "It's a labor of love first and foremost, but basically, it entails teamwork, it entails a selfless effort." The foundation's next Dayton-area event is September 19.

A Dayton 14-Year-Old Broke a National Record

A month ago the Dayton Wolverines Track Club was still raising money to get its qualifying athletes to Iowa, and this week they came home from the AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines with 22 national medals, four national titles, 12 All-Americans and 32 personal records. Demare Smith, 14, won the boys 100-meter hurdle prelims in 13.19 seconds, then broke the AAU Junior Olympics record in the event and finished the week a national champion, and he had company, because fellow champions Faith Brown and Te'yone Strodes each placed multiple times, with Brown taking first in the 400-meter hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles. Head coach Harry Ways traces all of it back to early mornings in Iowa and counts every personal best as hardware, saying "a personal record to me is just as tough as a medal because you did your all-time best at nationals," and he still made room for these kids to be kids, with pajama parties and line dancing put together by the track club moms. In the 4x800m relay, Elizabeth Honaker, 11, said the group "had to work for a while" drilling handoffs and building up the 800, while Ayshia Lewis, 10, PR'd twice and Vanna Reynolds, 12, who did not think she would medal last time, ran "with much more confidence" and medaled. Brown says the trophies belong to the whole city, because "the club supports the community a lot of times through volunteer work, feeding the homeless, helping out at other track meets," and after Saturday's banquet the Wolverines set their sights on next year's nationals in Houston, Texas.
