🎸 21 Bands, 3 Stages, One Oregon District Weekend
For 22 years, Dayton Music Fest has showcased local music, and this year it brings 21 bands to the Oregon District this Friday (October 9) from 8 to 11:50 p.m. and Saturday (October 10) from 7:30 to 11:50 p.m. Shows are split across Blind Bob's (21+), Oregon Express (18+), and Yellow Cab Tavern (16+), with a lineup that includes K. Carter, Human Cannonball, Fancy Feast, Paid Leave, Irby Ray, Catsteel, The Bruins, and Better Anyway. There are no pre-sale tickets, so passes are sold at the door: $10 for one venue, $15 for all venues on one day, or $25 for both days. Organizers Paige Beller and Blind Bob's booker Brandon Hawk are teaming up to book the fest for the second year in a row.

❤️ Strollers, Cheerleaders, and 26 Years of Heart Health
Hundreds of people turned out in Englewood for the 26th African American Heart Walk, from parents pushing strollers to couples who come back year after year. The walk was moved from its original Sept. 24 date because of weather, and people still showed up both in person and virtually. Organizers used the day to talk about heart health and warning signs, noting that African Americans are 30% more likely to have hypertension, which can lead to heart disease and stroke. Their advice for everyone: know your numbers, get to know your health care provider, and build habits you can keep.

📦 From Kettering Takeout to an Air Force Base
Dexa, the drone delivery company based at 444 E. Second St. downtown, now has airmen at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts flying one of its drones for deliveries on base. Founder and CEO Beth Flippo leads a team of about 50 employees, including technicians who assemble the aircraft, and the company has FAA approval to fly beyond an operator's line of sight. Closer to home, Dexa renewed its partnership with TJ Chumps in Kettering for limited drone delivery within a set area. Flippo calls 2027 her "takeoff year" and expects a Columbus-area restaurant to announce a partnership with Dexa before the end of this year.

Two Dayton Sisters: Six Years on the Mat, Gold on the World Stage

Sisters K’ana Butcher (right with pink hair) and Salayah McClendon (left) pose with their sensei Craig Sosobee

Dayton sisters K'ana Butcher, 19, and Salayah McClendon, 14, came home from the WMAC World Championships in Bregenz, Austria with two gold medals and a bronze each. Their mom, Ravae Powell, signed them up for martial arts six years ago because she wanted them to gain more confidence. At the Sept. 17 to 20 competition, Salayah won her first overseas gold in Traditional Japanese Weapons with her bo staff and took first in forms, while K'ana won gold in both weapons and forms plus a bronze in pointfighting.

The sisters have already competed abroad in the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, and this trip adds Austria to the list. K'ana says martial arts has changed her life in many ways, giving her "confidence and self-discipline," the very thing her mom set out to build.

CITY HALL

Ohio's seasonal daytime burn ban is in effect, so open burning is off-limits from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October and November, according to the Beavercreek Township Fire Department. The rule applies even if you use a proper burn barrel. Burning after 6 p.m. still has to follow state and local open-burning rules, including limits on what can be burned, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has the full details.

WEATHER WATCH

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Dayton and Xavier meet in an outdoor exhibition tomorrow (Wednesday, October 7) at 5:30 p.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, part of the CareSource Invitational. If rain is in the forecast, the game moves to UD Arena. The old rivals haven't played a game that counts in 11 years, and fourth-year forward Jaiun Simon is the only scholarship player who appeared in their last exhibition in 2024. Coach Anthony Grant says playing outside will change everything from the elements to the lighting and space.

Next game: Dayton will face Xavier on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m., an outdoor exhibition at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason before Ohio State and Cincinnati play the second game.
